"Loca" was an attempt to pluralize "locum" as if it were the nominative case of a second-declension Latin noun (cf. bellum, bella [war]). Actually "locum" is the accusative case form of "locus," which has no form "loca." "Locums" may look ugly but is no worse than "operas."
