Page format
[edit]Any reason this isn't in a standard Wiki Tables format? Such as https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lists_of_earthquakes. It seems odd to have some entries without a picture of the mascot - propose to delete these rows without pictures due to improper licences? Perhaps the page should be split into two pages: Open Source mascots and other mainstream Computing mascots? Oimon (talk) 10:42, 27 September 2025 (UTC)
Some mascots of free software are actually non-free
[edit]Trademarked, copyrighted, understandable -- a cruel world needs some protection. But to the point of limiting free use on free media? (Beastie, Mozilla, Hexley, etc.) Doesn't feel right for something associated with free culture movement. Free software news are usually boring to read through. A mascot relates better to the public, why not be a little more permissive and just let them fly? If not, why even bother to put up a mascot in the first place? Example? How about these?
[edit]Clarus the Dogcow - official mascot of Apple Developer Support (and documented as such in a Tech Note.)
Rover the Dog - Official mascot of Microsoft BOB, and reappears in Search/Find in XP. Also, Rover is one of the characters that can be used to replace the Clippit character in Office Assistant.
Microsoft BOB - unofficial mascot of "never hire your girlfriend/wife".
Clippit (aka Clippy, aka Microsoft Paperclip) -official mascot of "Microsoft Office Assistant". The Clippit character is replaceable in operation with several other characters. Clippit is irreplacable as the most hated computing mascot of all time (I'm sure we can find multiple sources attesting to that).
Mario - mascot of Nintendo (Not mentioned is his bio page https://www.nintendo.co.jp/character/mario/characters/index.html )
Sonic - mascot of Sega Replacing the previous mascot: Alex Kidd according to https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sonic_the_Hedgehog

Gentoo mascots are notable enough to be mentioned in the Gentoo article https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gentoo_Linux#Logo_and_mascots. Xenia

- Whether the mascot is "valid" or not is not relevant to the discussion. The issue is that Xenia completely lacks notability. - The fact that we are having this conversation alone means it has become one, despite not being officially sancioned by any body.
- Just like with traditions, mascots too must be created. At no point Tux was just assumed to exist since time immemorial. Someone must have drawn him.

- Agree. The whole Xenia row is a mess. The reference column cites a 1996-1997 Linux mascot contest which featues LinuxFox, a character of different name, author and design. LinuxFox isn't more notable than any other mascot propositions of than contest and shouldn't be here. And it isn't! The "canonically transgender" remark, aside being arguably irrelevant, links to a random blog that tells the original author created their character a boy, and this listed here is someone's recently made OC "Xenia" inspired by LinuxFox, and "canonically transgender" refers to Xenia and not LinuxFox. Pony
[edit]The Pony language mascot (
) was heavy-handedly removed and blocked from inclusion by certain opposing editors.
It had the proper license and permission for use, the language is notable, and has it own Wikipedia page. It was arguably as worthy as some of the other mascots listed, who are unchallenged and without reversions. Wukuendo (talk) 09:44, 28 May 2025 (UTC)
