An editor has inserted a note that Michael Chambers was "declared legally dead on May 27, 2017" (just over two months after his disappearance), citing as the source the Discovery programme about the case. As a resident of the UK, I have not yet been able to view this programme, so I am unable to confirm that. However, I have found online a news report (at https://www.nbcdfw.com/news/local/Family-Wants-Answers-in-Missing-Retired-Firefighters-Disappearance-448544183.html) dated September 28, 2017, in which there is no reference to such an event; indeed, the family are reported as still hoping Chambers would be found alive, in which case they would not have applied to have him declared legally dead.
