The anatomy of the humane body 1713 page 42. the joyning of theſe two Tendons on the outside of the Rectus Muscle, is called Linea semilunaris.
A short description of the human muscles, chiefly as they appear on dissection. 1784 On the outside of the rectus muscle, the tendon of the external oblique appears whiter than elsewhere, by its being there connected with the tendons of the internal oblique and transverse muſeles; so that this part has been called Linea semilunaris, from its curved shape.

- Μυσκοτομια: or, the anatomical administration of all the muscles 1648. pages 4-5. This one is a bit harder to understand: Obliquus Ascendens Arises fleshly from the Appendix of the 0s Ileon, and membranous from the proceses of the same Vertebres as the former, and so ascending fleshy, inserts himself into the 11 and 12 Ribs; then extending himself into a large double Tendon (in which the Rectus is conveyed) proceeds to the Linea alba, and Semilurari Membrain, and is implanted into the 8,9 and 10 Ribs. [...] Transversalis Ariseth with a nervous Membrain from the same ligament as the former; as also with a fleshy origination from the internal part of the bastard Ribs, and terminates in a broad Tendon at the semilunary Membrains, the Linea alba, and so down to the Os pubis, he adheres firmly to the subjacent Peritoneum in a maner all along, onely near the Pubis he divides himſelf. The way this is written sounds like the linea semilunaris is entirely above the 12th rib(?) but that is not correct. Although perhaps "extending" means extending horizontally, which would make sense. - As for Spiegel's definition himself, it doesn't seem so clear. Vierstraete et al. write that 'Adriaan van den Spiegel described the Linea Semilunaris as the line forming and marking the transition from muscle to aponeurosis in the transversus abdominis muscle of the abdomen (“circa quam tendines obliquorum abdominis musculorum incipent”)' However, the full quote here is simply "Linea semilunaris à Spigelio dicta, circa quam tendines obliquorum abdominis musculorum incipiunt." The translation seems to be adding too much here. Additionally in the original text only version he writes "Incipit autem tendo ipse membranosus, circa lineam semilunarem a me vocatam, (cum semilunae respondeat,) quae fir a concursu tendinum musculorum, cum obliquorum, cum transuersorum ibi incipientium." which explicitly includes more than just the transversus. Similarly about the transversus he writes: latum tendinem circa semilunarem lineam, vt obliqui, eiuldem etiam cum illis subftantiea efformant, & sic versus lineam candidam properant, cui tandem, vt priores inseruntur. The 1640s version, I believe, is not even written by Spiegel as he had already died by the point that line was added, unless it appears also in the original text, but I have not been able to find it there. - Worth noting that there also seems to be multiple meanings for the term spigelian aponeurosis/spigelian fascia, with some equating it with the linea semilunaris itself. Here is the oldest example of that: The British Journal of Surgery 1943-04: Vol 30 Iss 120 page 386 The linea semilunaris separating the lateral border of the rectus from the medial edge of the obliquus internus was present only opposite the upper third of the former muscle. The ‘linea’, however, is about 25 mm. broad, thus forming an aponeurosis (Spigelian aponeurosis). Here's a more recent example: Abdominal Ultrasound, 1987 Mittelstaedt, Carol A. p. 549 The paired rectus abdominis muscles are delineated medially in the midline of the body by the linea alba, while laterally, the aponeuroses of the external oblique, internal oblique, and transversus abdominis muscles unite to form a band-like vertical fibrous groove called the linea semilunaris, or Spigelian fascia. Sourcing issue
[edit]I wanted to quote the following line from https://www.elsevier.es/en-revista-revista-hispanoamericana-hernia-357-articulo-controversias-historicas-las-hernias-semilunares-S225526771400036X:

However I could not find this claim supported in the cited source: https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/ar.1151 I didn't read the whole thing but couldn't find the word semilunaris or semilunar in that article. The footnote given for this (6) is also not Riva but G. Casseri. Iulii Casserii Placentini Tabulae anatomicae LXXIIX. Ed.
