ENGVAR

I saw a recent change from British to American English, which would be consistent with the tag on this page, and out of a misguided curiosity decided to see when it was added.

Turns out it was changed from British to American in this unexplained edit by KING1116 in January 2021. At the time the article was this version, which is not altogether one variety or the other but at a quick scan it appears to me that British predominates. The British tag, on the other hand, was added in this edit by Tbhotch in November 2010, and the article was this version.

Generally it's a bad idea to necromance to figure out if ENGVAR changes were done correctly years in the past; if the current article is consistent it's probably best to leave it be. That said, at a glance it does appear that this one was probably not done correctly. The article still using British English 16 years after I added the tag. King is a user with 40 edits and that hasn't edited since 2021. A simple revert to their change is enough. Tbhotch^™ (CC BY-SA 4.0) 07:20, 28 August 2026 (UTC)

The article was tagged in the Talk page as American ENGVAR. The spellings were mixed. Fewer changes were needed to move to fully American than fully British, so I boldly applied the spellings for American to create consistency. Johnjbarton (talk) 16:29, 11 September 2026 (UTC)

I'm the one who changed all the "color"s to "colour". Yes I didn't look in Talk or the revision history which would have made it obvious, but I did look at the top of the page and the "Use American English" tag wasn't there at the time. Oh well... Solong2go (talk) 02:20, 12 September 2026 (UTC)

Yes, it is unfortunate and confusing that the tag can be either or both places. The tool I used, User:Ohconfucius/EngvarB adds the Use tag corresponding to the language. I ran it three times on the page for each of AMERICAN BRITISH OXFORD to get a count of the number of changes in each direction. That and the tag in Talk landed on AMERICAN and now we have both places tagged. Johnjbarton (talk) 02:47, 12 September 2026 (UTC)
