I suggest merging L-DOPA into this article, as they both refer to the same chemical compound, viewed from different perspectives. "L-DOPA" is simply the abbreviated form of "levodopa". To differentiate between uses and contexts, it may be helpful to insert the respective subheadings, but maintaining two separate articles on essentially the same topic likely does not contribute to a better understanding. Support merge. An IP editor boldly split L-DOPA to the two articles last September (L-DOPA, Special:Diff/1248169830; levodopa, Special:Diff/1248169788). The justification was that this is consistent with other article pairs that split focus on a molecule between 'chemistry' and 'medication'. In my view the split doesn't satisfy P&G behind WP:SPLIT per article size or content. Though, it seems that other editors see the difference between use as a medication versus everything else as a sufficiently different topic for a content split. ⇌Synpath11:42, 9 April 2025 (UTC)Reply
Support – As noted by others, examples exist for both positions - split and not split. Wikipedia:Splitting says to split due to size or scope, suggesting to split, but also says size must be considered, supporting the counter-point. Oppose merge. I was the IP editor who split the page. (I had been trying to quit/vanish from Wiki but ended up editing again logged out and am now on my account again.) There is a well-established standard on Wikipedia of having separate articles for compounds that are both endogenous mediators (e.g., hormones, neurotransmitters, precursors, etc.) and pharmaceutical medications. There are many examples of this, like estradiol and estradiol (medication), oxytocin and oxytocin (medication), and adrenaline (epinephrine) and epinephrine (medication), among others. This approach allows for more focused and less-confusing/bloated articles. If levodopa were to be merged back into L-DOPA, the medical content would dwarf the content on L-DOPA as a biological precursor. The L-DOPA page certainly needs more expansion, but I don't think the right course of action is merging the articles back into a single page. – AlyInWikiWonderland (talk, contribs) 01:32, 9 July 2025 (UTC)Reply

I'd like to reinforce this point. As someone who just came here to check some info on L-DOPA's role in synthesis pathways, I would have found it very confusing if the article title used a name like "levodopa" that implies one specific use among many. Yes, they are the same compound. Both "Levodopa" and "L-DOPA" are abbreviations of l-3,4-dihydroxyphenylalanine. The two abbreviations are used in different contexts: "Levodopa" is used exclusively when discussing use of this compound as a medication (to treat Parkinson's disease), while L-DOPA is also used when discussing its physiological functions in biochemistry and neuroscience.
I think the readership of both topics is divided enough that having two articles is justified. People interested in Parkinson's disease can read about the medication, while people interested in biochemistry can get all the biosynthetic pathways and such that the average patient or their family doesn't care about. I admit that the L-DOPA (biochem) article is a bit short at the moment, but the solution to that is not a merge. Toadspike[Talk]08:07, 17 July 2025 (UTC)Reply
