Ethnicity

[edit]

Some editors and IPs have been going back and forth for a while over a claim that Leo Africanus is Berber (latest examples: , ). In the contested edits, the claim is attributed to Rauchenberger (1999; see sources section), which is in German and which I can't access. However, I've looked at multiple other reliable references (e.g. , ) and all of them consistently mention his Andalusi origin (or sometimes "Moorish"), while none of them ascribe him a more specific ethnicity. One reference even states categorically that he was "not Berber" (). According to the introduction here (see first page of introduction chapter, "Who was Leo Africanus?"), it seems that the only clue we have about his family origins is his surname, which could have a Berber connection or could have some other origin, but this is only speculation.

Either way, this does not seem like something on which an academic consensus exists. If so, then it would be WP:UNDUE to state any further ethnicity in the lead. Theories about his family origins would be better discussed in the body of the article and should respect WP:NPOV. R Prazeres (talk) 07:47, 25 January 2024 (UTC)Reply
