Early comments from 2008
[edit]"Leg warmers are worn as fashion pieces and do not serve any other useful function." - Where is the evidence for this?
— Preceding unsigned comment added by 82.13.81.63 (talk) 16:07, 1 January 2008 (UTC) (modified 00:07, 8 April 2008 (UTC) by 90.198.3.93)
The following paragraphs were suggested to explain the purpose of leg warmers:
"Leg warmers were originally dancewear worn by Ballet and other classic dancers. Used during the first parts of class or rehearsal, leg warmers help the muscles and tendons in calf and ankle warm up until they are sufficiently loosened from stretching, particularly in cold environments. Using leg warmers is believed to prevent muscle and ligament strains due to over-exercising cold legs. They are also used to keep dancers' leg muscles warm between periods of activity."
"Leg warmers can vary in length, though not in width, due to the material's stretchiness. They are commonly worn to just below the knee, though many dancers prefer it to extend to cover the lower parts of the thigh. Some leg warmers cover the entire foot; these warmers usually have a pad that grips the floor so the dancer does not slip. Some leg warmers are particularly short and made of thinner material; these are also known as 'ankle warmers'."
Why have these been removed?

use in cycling
[edit]Leg warmers and arm warmers are made specifically for use in cycling, and have been for well over half a century. Cycling leg warmers are long enough to cover much of the thigh and overlap cycling shorts; while arm warmers will overlap the sleeves of a short sleeve jersey. This allow one to convert shorts and jersey to full length garments for warmth, either for warmup purposes or for comfort in cold weather; but still allow for easy removal when not needed. leg warmers
[edit]Leg warmers are worn to keep the lower legs warm in colder weather. They can be tubular sleeves, long fabric wrappings, or simple pieces of fur or fabric tied around the calves. They are used in several sports including cycling, soccer, hockey, ice skating, and dance.
They have several advantages the main one being that they keep you warmer (a pair of summer shoes can become as warm as knee high boots), second they allow you to regulate your sweating and body temperature easier than long underwear pulling them up or pushing them down, third they don't need to be changed and washed as often as socks when backpacking so you can carry more smaller socks.
Leg warmers make part of the traditional clothing of different cultures. They are called Hmoob Dlub leg wraps of the hmong tribes , loferl stuzen in southern Germany, alpaca Calentadores, and singket by the Singpho in Northern India, CharlesMJames (talk) 23:47, 29 October 2017 (UTC)

Requested move 21 December 2025
[edit]- The following is a closed discussion of a requested move. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section on the talk page. Editors desiring to contest the closing decision should consider a move review after discussing it on the closer's talk page. No further edits should be made to this discussion.
The result of the move request was: moved back to Leg warmer per WP:NCPLURAL, a new discussion can be started to move to the plural form. I've left Leg Warmers as a redirect since I didn't think it was too implausible of a search term to suppress the redirect. Leg Warmers → Leg warmers – i changed it to "Leg Warmers" because it would not allow me to put "Leg warmers" could someone please change it to proper capitalization? kgw :3 ♡ talk to me! ♡ contributions i've made :0 05:41, 21 December 2025 (UTC)
- Support move, but your original move should also have gone through this process. O.N.R. (talk) 06:42, 21 December 2025 (UTC)
- i did say that it did not allow me to put "Leg warmers" for some reason so that was why kgw :3 ♡ talk to me! ♡ contributions i've made :0 06:59, 21 December 2025 (UTC)
- oh wait, you meant requesting a move? kgw :3 ♡ talk to me! ♡ contributions i've made :0 07:00, 21 December 2025 (UTC)
- Support, I think we should just close this discussion now and move the page. The only thing that really needs to be discussed here is the original move from Leg warmer to Leg warmers (plural), and even that feels pretty uncontroversial to me. If we can abide the pluralisation, I see no need to continue this discussion. Thanks, Glasspalace (talk) 06:47, 21 December 2025 (UTC)

Leg warmer → Leg warmers – Following a recent undiscussed move to pluralize the title by @Killgirlswatch that has now been reverted, I'm neutrally opening this move request for the sake of putting that request through the proper channels. The original rationale for the move was that the subject is most commonly referred to in plural (and as far as I can tell the article has used the term "leg warmers" right from the lede since before the original undiscussed move). As such, it can be seen as an exception to NCPLURAL somewhat due to the plural form being commonly favored over the singular. Thanks, Glasspalace (talk • contribs) 06:21, 22 December 2025 (UTC)
- Despite my earlier comments that this would be an uncontroversial change, upon further consideration I do weakly oppose this proposal to maintain consistency with articles like Sock. However, the plural term is definitely favored within Ngram, which lends some credence to it being an NCPLURAL exception. Thanks, Glasspalace (talk • contribs) 06:24, 22 December 2025 (UTC)
- Oppose, WP:NCPLURAL lists an exception for "cases where the title exists only in the plural." This does not apply here as, though they are sold and worn in pairs, leg warmers are a pair of single items. See also sock, glove, and shoe. Contrast with pants and leggings which cover different types of respective items, whereas leg warmer only covers the one. Horse.staple (talk) 07:02, 22 December 2025 (UTC)
- Oppose By the same logic as sock, glove and shoe as previously stated. ᴢxᴄᴠʙɴᴍ (ᴛ) 07:28, 22 December 2025 (UTC)
- Weak oppose on the grounds of WP:CONSISTENCY with Sock, Shoe, Glove, etc. I initially leaned supportive but I find the statements above persuasive. I'm not bothered by the use of the plural in the lead and throughout the article; the lead could be reworded but I don't think that's necessary. —Myceteae🍄🟫 (talk) 23:50, 22 December 2025 (UTC)
