BLP edit request: ALPA expulsion sentence

[edit source]

I am Lee Moak, the subject of this article, and I have a conflict of interest. I am requesting removal of the final sentence in the ALPA section:

“Moak was expelled from ALPA in 2023 for an Article VIII violation for services performed for an outside entity acting contrary to the interests of the Union and its members.”

This statement is false or, at minimum, materially misleading. It is contentious negative material about a living person and appears to be sourced only to an ALPA FastRead item, which is a primary and interested-party source from the organization involved in the dispute. I do not see independent reliable secondary coverage establishing the accuracy, context, or encyclopedic significance of this claim.

The wording also presents ALPA’s internal position as settled fact in Wikipedia’s voice. The cited source does not provide independent adjudication, third-party verification, or broader context. The statement gives undue weight to an internal union disciplinary dispute that occurred years after my ALPA presidency and after my airline career, while placing it in a section about my 2011–2014 ALPA tenure.

Under Wikipedia’s biographies of living persons policy, contentious material about living persons that is unsourced or poorly sourced should be removed immediately. I respectfully request that this sentence be removed.

If editors believe some mention must remain, I request that it not be stated in Wikipedia’s voice and that it be rewritten only with attribution, for example:

“In July 2023, ALPA announced that an internal hearing board had sustained Article VIII charges against Moak related to services performed for an outside entity.”

My primary request is removal because the claim is disputed, damaging, sourced only to an interested party, and lacks independent reliable secondary coverage.

Thank you. SafeAviation (talk) 21:51, 7 May 2026 (UTC)Reply

Following up respectfully on this pending BLP/COI edit request. To clarify, the narrow request is removal of one contentious negative sentence about a living person because it appears to rely only on an interested primary source from ALPA, the organization involved in the dispute, and I am not aware of independent reliable secondary coverage establishing the claim or its encyclopedic significance.
I understand the backlog is high and appreciate any editor’s review. If editors believe some mention should remain, I respectfully ask that it be attributed rather than stated in Wikipedia’s voice, and that it not be placed in a section about my 2011–2014 ALPA presidency when the internal ALPA matter occurred years later.   Article claim clarified

  • The claim in the article largely coheres with the information published online by ALPA. That statement was ALPAs hearing board sustaining charges presented by FedEx's Master Executive Council. Because it was a finding based on their examination of the evidence, I've placed that finding in quotations in order to satisfy WP:VOICE.

Thank you for reviewing the request and for addressing the WP issue by attributing the statement.
I respectfully ask that the remaining BLP/source-quality issue also be considered. My concern is not only whether the sentence is stated in Wikipedia’s voice, but whether this contentious negative material about a living person should be included at all when the cited source appears to be ALPA’s own publication about an internal union disciplinary matter.
As I understand WP, contentious material about a living person that is poorly sourced should be removed, and the burden is on inclusion. I am not aware of independent reliable secondary coverage establishing either the claim itself or its encyclopedic significance. The current source appears to be from the organization directly involved in the dispute, not an independent source.
Could an uninvolved editor please consider whether this sentence should be removed unless and until independent reliable secondary sources support its inclusion and weight? If editors believe some mention should remain, I respectfully ask that it be limited, clearly attributed, and moved out of the section concerning my 2011–2014 ALPA presidency, because the cited internal matter occurred years later. I came here regarding this BLP noticeboard posting and removed the statement on WP:BLP grounds (if we are to err, we should do so on the side of removal). If there is independent secondary sourcing (ALPA is non-independent and primary) that gives both the ALPA and Moak's side of the story, I would not be opposed to including a dispassionate inclusion of the event. ALPA, the organization involved in the dispute The COI editor is wrong in this respect. ALPA was not involved in the dispute, they merely mediated it. Delta and FedEx Master Executive Councils were the petitioners, thus they were involved in the dispute. The reporting on this comes from the mediator. There is a section on ALPA in the subject's article (with some of the more glowing details added by a banned editor from the VentureKit sockfarm). It would seem that if there is a section on the subject's work for ALPA, what happened after his work at ALPA seems reasonable to include because he is a WP:PUBLICFIGURE and ALPA determined that his work was to the detriment of ALPA. The source said

The charges sustained by the hearing board concerned services he performed for an outside entity subsequent to his ALPA service and retirement that the MECs believed, and the hearing board found, acted contrary to the interests of ALPA and its members. The hearing board has determined that he be expelled from ALPA. Capt. Moak has chosen not to appeal this decision.

The subject's article has references written by the subject, written by colleagues of the subject, and several other primary source government documents, but this primary source document from ALPA can't be included? Regards,  Spintendo  23:22, 1 August 2026 (UTC)Reply
Thank you for explaining your position. I recognize that the ALPA statement is an authentic primary source and that it reports the organization’s decision.
My concern is not whether the ALPA statement exists, but whether this contentious post-employment matter warrants inclusion in a biography of a living person based solely on a statement issued by the organization that initiated and adjudicated the disciplinary process. The quoted statement provides ALPA’s characterization and conclusion, but it does not provide independent reporting, the underlying facts, Moak’s position, or broader context.
The presence of other primary sources elsewhere in the article does not necessarily establish that every proposed fact supported by a primary source should be included. Each proposed addition should be evaluated independently for reliability, neutrality, relevance, and due weight—particularly when it concerns adverse or disputed material about a living person.
If substantial independent, reliable secondary sources have covered the expulsion and treated it as a significant part of Moak’s public career, those sources should be presented and the matter can be evaluated in that context. In the absence of such coverage, I respectfully believe the ALPA announcement alone does not establish sufficient encyclopedic significance or appropriate weight for inclusion.
I also do not believe the fact that the article contains a section describing Moak’s four-year presidency of ALPA automatically makes every later internal union proceeding relevant to that section. His presidency was a major public leadership role. The later proceeding concerned work performed after he had left office and retired, and its significance to his overall biography should therefore be demonstrated through independent coverage rather than inferred from ALPA’s own announcement.
Because I am the subject of the article, I will not edit the article directly and leave the determination to uninvolved editors applying the biographies-of-living-persons, sourcing, and due-weight policies. SafeAviation (talk) 01:18, 2 August 2026 (UTC)Reply

Request to add Sentinel of Safety Award

[edit source]

I am Lee Moak, the subject of this article, and I have a conflict of interest. I am requesting that an uninvolved editor consider adding the following sourced information before the References section:

== Awards and honors ==

In 2015, Moak received the National Air Traffic Controllers Association's 2014 Sentinel of Safety Award, NATCA's highest honor presented to an individual outside the organization for achievements in advancing aviation safety.<ref>{{cite web |title=2014 Sentinel of Safety Award: Capt. Lee Moak |url=https://natca.org/2015/05/13/2014-capt-lee-moak/|website=National Air Traffic Controllers Association |date=May 13, 2015 |access-date=July 27, 2026}}</ref>

Source: https://natca.org/2015/05/13/2014-capt-lee-moak/

This request is limited to adding the documented award and is not intended to make any broader promotional claims. SafeAviation (talk) 00:43, 28 July 2026 (UTC)Reply

Not done for now Please include the Wikilink for this award.  Spintendo  23:23, 1 August 2026 (UTC)Reply
Thank you. I have revised the proposed text to include a Wikilink to the National Air Traffic Controllers Association:
== Awards and honors ==
In 2015, Moak received the [[National Air Traffic Controllers Association]]'s 2014 Sentinel of Safety Award, the organization’s highest honor presented to an individual outside NATCA for achievements in advancing aviation safety.<ref>{{cite web |title=2014 Sentinel of Safety Award: Capt. I could not locate a separate Wikipedia article for the Sentinel of Safety Award itself, so I linked the awarding organization. Please let me know if a different Wikilink was intended.
