Luser query

[edit]

Question: Are matters of Govt. policy layer 8 also? These are outside of the OSI.

Well, it's a joke, so it can be whatever you'd like. ffm 20:37, 9 June 2008 (UTC)Reply
Why doesn't the article mention that it's a joke? Ignorant readers are likely to take this seriously. simba 17:49, 25 May 2018 (UTC)Reply
Definitely the second source is just a joke and the hierarchy is ambiguous, so I updated the page to communicate that it is just humorous. Humor is sometimes used also as a way of saying something we might not be willing to admit, or doesn't neatly fit into our conception of things. In this sense I think Bruce's layers are both intended as humor, and an earnest but non-committal exploration into the more esoteric ideas within cybernetics. Hoax?

[edit]

Hoax? I'd prefer to call it a joke. An established joke and well-documented joke, not one invented by a Wikipedian. Notable? Notable enough, in my opinion. --RenniePet (talk) 13:21, 21 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

layer zero

[edit]

Another matter of humour related to layer 8, - is layer 0. Nothing works without layer zero = continuous electric power supply. --84.180.124.112 (talk) 09:14, 2 October 2011 (UTC)Reply

Counterpoint: RFC1149 -- Resuna (talk) 13:59, 4 January 2018 (UTC)Reply

This implies that layer 0 is the information theory model. An aggregate system involving the transmitter, channel, message, and recipient. For example, a file stored is a message from the past computer (transmitter) to the future computer (recipient) through the drive (channel). Clay tablets, paper, verbal communication, sign language, light from stars to earth, etc all fall under layer zero. Arvash (talk) 16:54, 22 July 2022 (UTC)Reply

three additional layers

[edit]

There is also joke about OSI + the following three;

  • Economical layer (can we afford)
  • Political layer (is it possible to justify the attempt to try, do, or have what ever it is)
  • Religious / philosophical layer (what is it, how do we feel about it, how good is it, and various related aspects) — Preceding unsigned comment added by 199.204.28.1 (talk) 14:48, 12 February 2013 (UTC)Reply
We could call the Religious Layer Layer 13
also voting for adding:
Layer 11 - Deep State
Layer 12 - The Secret Jewish/Nazi/Lizzard People living underground
Layer 13 - Religious Layer
Layer 14 - God Layer
Layer 15 - your wife (telling you to do some work)

Undefined acronyms

[edit]

This image is used on the page: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:OSI_user_layers.png However, I do not know what SOA and OSA are... I don't see any indication as to what these are on the page. I think SOA is Service Oriented Architectures, but then what is OSA? Joedf (talk) 20:12, 10 October 2019 (UTC)Reply

Page overhaul, or "How many layers in this joke?"

[edit]

This page currently has sourcing issues and notability concerns. I think the idea of Layer 8 is established enough to keep. We have pages for other jokes, including Bar joke, Lightbulb joke, and Microsoft joke (which is a redirect).

Layers 9, 10, and so on seem less like established concepts and more like running with the bit, especially since what the layers represent keeps changing. SenshiSun (talk) 21:41, 8 January 2026 (UTC)Reply
