Phonetics and geography

Do there exist approachable sources about wide-scale distribution of phonetic features, especially extralinguistic influences from the environment in which a language is spoken? For example, click consonants are most widespread in southern Africa, and I've read claims that languages spoken in harsher climates (e.g. cold, sand) tend to have fewer distinct vowels (e.g. Inuktitut, Arabic) or more consonant clusters due to speakers not wanting to open the mouth too far. I've heard about an article on this, but Google runs me into one paywall after another, unlike an article about downplaying this view. --Damian Yerrick (talk | stalk) 16:08, 8 February 2011 (UTC)
