Broad-concept article

[edit]

This is a Wikipedia:Broad-concept article serving to provide a cursory overview of the variations in meaning of the term "LGBTQ issue" and guide them to articles where the topics are comprehensively discussed. —Alalch E. 22:55, 16 September 2025 (UTC)Reply

Potential for merge to LGBTQ people

[edit]
The following discussion is closed. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section. A summary of the conclusions reached follows.
The below post-AfD merge discussion ran in parallel to the deletion review and has been found as valid alternative to deletion outcome that was the contention of the DRV. Article author, DRV requestor and original AfD closer (inside the DRV) agreed. So the below merge discussion can be considered unanimous and preempting the DRV, which was closed as moot upon request by the DRV requstor in light of this WP:ATD-M outcome resulting in merge. @Alalch E.: In the recent deletion discussion and current deletion review the question of merging this article was raised. I didn't have the time to respond to the proposal in the deletion discussion before it was closed, and I think it is out-of-scope for the DRV, so I have raised it here for discussion.

I can only apologize for your disappointment in the current state of the article LGBTQ people. I have spent a lot of time and effort on it, but it is a big project and my editing time has been limited lately.

I think trying to sort out LGBTQ topics that are “issues” from LGBTQ topics that are not "not issues" is unhelpful and probably inherently non-neutral, so I get where the description of LGBTQ issue as a POVFORK is coming from. But whether this is a POVFORK or merely a redundant fork doesn't really matter. There should only be one broad concept article on topics related to LGBTQ people. Ultimately, the issue is not the relative quality of LGBTQ people and LGBTQ issue as they currently are, it is that the former title sets out the clearer and more neutral scope for the BCA.

That said, if content from LGBTQ issue could be added to LGBTQ people without carrying over the "issue" vs. "non-issue" framework, that article does need improvement and expansion.--Trystan (talk) 15:03, 27 September 2025 (UTC)Reply

@Trystan Yes, I believe it could easily be added by copying all of the body content over, converting l3 into simpler l2 headings ("Movements", "Rights", ...), and keeping also the existing "Rights" content there. The "issue" conceptualization wouldn't be visible. "LGBTQ issue/s" would be redirects targeting LGBTQ, not an "Issues" section within LGBTQ. —Alalch E. 17:04, 27 September 2025 (UTC)Reply
Please let me know your thoughts on this. I believe it reflects the substantial majority of the content from LGBTQ issue while adapting it to address my concerns above.
I was trying to work through what the end result would look like, and it ended up being fairly complicated to align the approaches of both articles, so I ended up just going ahead and doing it to illustrate. Please feel free to revert if that isn't what you had in mind.--Trystan (talk) 18:23, 27 September 2025 (UTC)Reply
Yes, that's exactly what I had in mind. Thank you. —Alalch E. 19:08, 27 September 2025 (UTC)Reply
And with this, I'm very happy to consider the two articles effectively merged, and, therefore, the LGBTQ issue broad-concept article should certainly not be live. I'm noting that there were "keep" !votes in the AfD, but I'm pretty confident that those editors would not oppose merging like this, and this is an incremental step that is premised on the content having been "kept" for content to be merged. So, I would recommend simply redirecting the LGBTQ issue article to complete the merger on this side, or would do so myself, without further process. (However, the deletion review is temporarily holding that up. Not a problem.) —Alalch E. 19:17, 27 September 2025 (UTC)Reply
I will post there suggesting it be closed if there are no objections.--Trystan (talk) 19:26, 27 September 2025 (UTC)Reply
