Rfc on Infobox Image

[edit]
The following discussion is an archived record of a request for comment. Please do not modify it. No further edits should be made to this discussion. A summary of the conclusions reached follows.
WP:NFCCP#1 applies and is not open to discussion: an RfC is completely inappropriate.

This Rfc is being opened to determine which image should be used in the infobox. The images up for review are as follows:

Image A is a non-free image whose use on Wikipedia is governed by fair use. Conversely, Image B is a copyright-free image with no conditions on its usage. Emiya1980 (talk) 19:10, 20 April 2024 (UTC)Reply

I have changed the images to links per WP:NFCCP#9. I shall terminate this RfC shortly. --Redrose64 🌹 (talk) 20:20, 20 April 2024 (UTC)Reply
@Emiya1980: You don't need a full-blown thirty-day formal WP:RFC for this. WP:NFCCP#1 is clear: non-free content is used only where no free equivalent is available that would serve the same encyclopedic purpose. You have shown that there is a free equivalent, so the current image cannot stay. --Redrose64 🌹 (talk) 20:28, 20 April 2024 (UTC)Reply

Note that File:Cernenko (upscale).jpg is not "an actual photograph" of Chernenko, it's an AI upscaled version of a much grainier image at File:Černěnko.jpg, where the AI has made a guess at what his eyes, nose and mouth might have looked like at a higher resolution. Per MOS:IMAGES I've replaced the image with the original historical photograph. --Belbury (talk) 11:53, 3 January 2025 (UTC)Reply

File:Konstantin Chernenko official portrait.jpg

[edit]

@Emiya1980: From the Commons source this appears to be a contemporary bit of 1980s Soviet airbrushing, rather than the kind of modern AI upscale mentioned above. I don't know how appropriate it is for the infobox, based on that, it may still be that a photo is preferable. Belbury (talk) 10:56, 14 December 2025 (UTC)Reply

The article's current lead image is a high quality photo that depicts Chernenko as he appeared in real-time. It doesn't seem appropriate to replace it with an airbrushed portrait designed to lionize him. Emiya1980 (talk) 11:34, 14 December 2025 (UTC)Reply
