  • ... that Kho Ping Hoo, despite writing numerous stories based on wuxia, could not read Chinese?

Chinese Name

[edit]

The Chinese script version of his name 李杰登 does not correspond to Kho Ping Hoo. In Standard Chinese it is read Li Jie Deng.Bill (talk) 06:34, 17 July 2024 (UTC)Reply

I will review. Edward056686 (talk) 07:01, 13 July 2026 (UTC)Reply

This is a good article about a very interesting creator.

  • Several of his ancestors, including his maternal great-grandmother and paternal grandmother, were of Javanese heritage. From a young age, he thus learned the Javanese language and script, and was exposed to Javanese mysticism. This could be "His maternal great-grandmother and paternal grandmother were of Javanese heritage, so he was exposed to Javanese mysticism and learned the Javanese language and script at an early age."
  • In 1959, Kho established the literary magazine Teratai (Lotus) with some friends.[2] They initially sought to have Oey Kim Tiang, a popular translator of Chinese stories, become a regular contributor,[8] but Oey refused. While still living in Tasikmalaya, Kho had penned several short stories, which were published in magazines such as Selecta, Pancawarna, and Star Weekly. Was Kho writing these stories before or after starting the magazine? Also, this sentence seems to imply that the magazine was founded somewhere other than Tasikmalaya.
  • Kho was primarily self-taught, learning how to write from his reading. This seems like information that should be presented earlier in the article.
  • Mostly, Kho did not translate existing works, as his command of oral Mandarin was limited and he could not read the script. This sentence is unclear. Is it saying that he rarely translated Mandarin works into Indonesian and that he could not read Mandarin?
    • Correct. Such a situation would have been somewhat common for a peranakan Chinese-Indonesian, many of whom were culturally closer to Java (and many of whom came from a Hokkien background, and thus would not have known much Mandarin anyways). He seems to have learned enough Mandarin to converse, but he clearly felt more comfortable with English. — Chris Woodrich (talk) 16:14, 17 July 2026 (UTC)Reply

Thank you for editing the article, spot check to follow. Edward056686 (talk) 01:52, 23 July 2026 (UTC)Reply

Spot checks

[edit]
  • 2a,b,c,d,e; fine

  • 7c; this seems to be on page 159 not 158

The spot check looks fine except for one small error. Edward056686 (talk) 02:27, 23 July 2026 (UTC)Reply
