Source for Moroccan

[edit]

I can't find a reliable source for Moroccan-American heritage besides a primary source- i.e. song lyric that seems to contradict previous interview. I would advocate removing him from the category of Americans of Moroccan descent if nothing substantial can be found. Also worth noting as possible source of confusion that the reporting about him seems to use father and step-father interchangeably; I was initially confused when I found an article about him visiting his father in prison in 2019[1] when this article states his father died of AIDS when he was a teenager. InsomniaOpossum (talk) 14:19, 20 January 2025 (UTC)Reply

Could someone please add to his heritage that his father is originally from Morocco. Gates is rapping this in his songs too. You don’t even have his name correct on here maybe that’s why people don’t wanna donate when you ask 10,000 times 2600:1014:A021:4E47:E1AF:8C7B:4A3B:BA2E (talk) 07:28, 7 January 2025 (UTC)Reply
Also, in God slippers even says his name is Marcellus Kevin Gates. I don’t even know where on earth they pulled this name out of. 2600:1014:A021:4E47:E1AF:8C7B:4A3B:BA2E (talk) 07:30, 7 January 2025 (UTC)Reply
[edit]

I have archived the old talk page, it is available at Talk:Kevin Gates/Archive 1. As part of a page restructuring, I added a Legal Issues section, as many other artists have on their pages. However, it is in need of more verification. The article cited from TrapWorldHipHop provides interviews with Gates as a means of verification, but the article itself is shoddy. Some additional verification, especially on Gates' offenses committed before 2010, would be helpful. Etzedek24 (talk) 23:25, 31 December 2017 (UTC)Reply

Contested move

[edit]

@Zaynha: Per WP:COMMONNAME, the page should remain here at Kevin Gates. I find the name Marcellus Kevin Gates questionable since it doesn't match the info in the article. EvergreenFir (talk) 20:25, 12 April 2018 (UTC)Reply

That's his real name as supported by the link. Just search using the name and you will find that's his name.Zaynha (talk) 20:26, 12 April 2018 (UTC)Reply
It's not his name. His name, per the Chicago Tribune[2] is Kevin Jerome Gilyard. Etzedek24 (Would it kill ya to leave an edit summary?) 20:28, 12 April 2018 (UTC)Reply

In the "Legal issues" section, "Felon in possession of a firearm charge" subsection, "Parole (Gilyard v. Baldwin, et al.)" sub-subsection, if that's the word:

"Gates appealed to the US Court of Appeals for the 7th Circuit in an emergency petition for injunctive relief, who heard the case beginning on May 7, 2018."

1. This is grammatically incorrect. If you read this literally as it's written, you're told that the "emergency petition" was the entity "who heard the case." 2. The text "appealed to the...Court of Appeals" is redundant. 3. The abbreviation "US" and the numeric diminutive "7th" aren't preferred in situations like this, which is obvious because that link is a redirect to the article whose title says "United States" and "Seventh." 4. It's probably not a flat-out error but referring to the "Court" with the pronoun "who" is awfully awkward while "which" works fine.

Here's my version. A quick copy and paste is all that's needed here:

"Gates filed an emergency petition requesting injunctive relief in the United States Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit, which heard the case beginning on May 7, 2018."

Thank you. 2600:1700:9AD0:4AB0:6323:23E:B0C6:936E (talk) 21:59, 11 October 2022 (UTC)Reply

For the battery charge section, I think it is important to include that Kevin Gates kicked the woman after she grabbed his crotch, and was convicted anyway with no punishment for the woman's initial assault. 2601:282:F00:12E0:EC11:CB01:DFAF:9069 (talk) 18:24, 16 October 2023 (UTC)Reply

Starting a car battery with his bare hands

[edit]

As many people know, a major controversy surrounding Kevin Gates is his mid-2022 claim to have started a car battery with his bare hands, crediting the action to a use of divine power (source: https://www.vibe.com/lists/kevin-gates-most-outlandish-claims/). He later doubled down on this, saying on DJ Akademics's show Off the Record that he would ask god to "kill [my children] today" if he was lying about having started this car battery with his hands (Source: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N8U9bMkOA-U). I personally was surprised that an event like this, especially since it has been well-covered and integrated into internet lore, with even Zohran Mamdani acknowledging it on Sidetalk NYC (Source: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5MvK4mfexN4 around 15:15). I feel like this is gonna get tagged as vandalism if I make this edit especially because this is a locked article for some reason? I genuinely believe that this is one of if not the most relevant things about Kevin Gates as it speaks to both his character and status as an iconic figure. Can I do this without being reported for vandalism? JustinSpitzer (talk) 22:21, 27 June 2026 (UTC)Reply

I genuinely believe that this is one of if not the most relevant things about Kevin Gates. Please allow me to make this edit, placing it either in the 2021-2022 section of his biography under the section about the release of his album Khaza. It could also be placed in the personal life section because of its relevance to his children, or put in a new section labeled something like "controversies". Thank you and please allow me to make this edit. Here is the updated text as should be added to the article: On January 20, 2022, Gates claimed on the Big Facts podcast to have started a car battery with his bare hands, crediting the action to a use of divine power. His exact words on this episode were: “The lady car was broke down. And I told her, ‘Listen, I could start your battery for you,'...She said, ‘We need jumper cables.’ I said, ‘No you don’t.’ I put my hands on the battery, I got this lil thing that I do. I told her to give me the keys. I jumped in there and cranked the car. She said, ‘You my angel.’ I said, ‘Speak nothing of this.’."[1] He later reaffirmed the truth of this statement, saying on DJ Akademics's show Off the Record that he would ask God to "kill [my children] today" if he was lying about having started this car battery with his hands[2]. This event has since become a discussed event in internet lore, causing New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani to acknowledging it on man-on-the-street internet talk show Sidetalk NYC[3].  Not done: This isn't significant enough to mention in the article, and calling it "one of ... the most relevant things about Kevin Gates" and a "major controversy" strains credulity. The article is not going to cover every one-off absurd remark Gates has ever made. Day Creature (talk) 12:43, 28 June 2026 (UTC)Reply
