Deafness
[edit]There is zero reason to leave out from the lead section that Kaylee Hottle is deaf. All reliable sources mention her deafness. It is completely in line with MOS:OPENPARABIO and MOS:BIOFIRSTSENTENCE to state this context. Erik (talk | contrib) (ping me) 03:18, 30 March 2024 (UTC)

- Stop censoring the lead section. Kaylee Hottle's deafness is central to her. You have zero reason to exclude it. Erik (talk | contrib) (ping me) 12:21, 30 March 2024 (UTC)
- Where the hell did you learn the word "censorship" from? Its not being censored at all when the info is still in the article 😂 🅶🅰🅼🅾🆆🅴🅱🅱🅴🅳 (talk) 12:53, 30 March 2024 (UTC)
- Furthermore, I did read your edit summary, and other stuff exists. It does not prove or disprove anything, and they do mention the blindness and deafblindness respectively. Neither are GA or FA, where the GA Shaylee Mansfield mentions it. Are you familiar with WP:LEAD which says, "The lead should identify the topic and summarize the body of the article with appropriate weight"? It also says, "The lead should stand on its own as a concise overview of the article's topic." Her film appearances and her deafness are the key identifiers, everything else is details about these elements.
- Explain why Kaylee Hottle's lead section should not mention her deafness at all. Do you somehow consider it offensive to mention this about her, despite all the reliable sources mentioning it? Erik (talk | contrib) (ping me) 12:26, 30 March 2024 (UTC)

Her Birthday
[edit]On IMDb & afew other Websites ....
it says that her Birthday is on May 1st, 2012 (NOT for in the Year 2007 or 2008) !!! BloodDraco (talk) 23:13, 2 April 2024 (UTC)
- The most recent reliable sources, like here, say that she is 16 years old, and the estimated birth year is based on that. IMDb is not reliable, and it's possible other websites copied from IMDb. Erik (talk | contrib) (ping me) 23:44, 2 April 2024 (UTC)
- how old is she actually because in an interview I heard that she was 9 in GODZILLA vs KONG so like I'm curious about her age and height she looks tall for an 11 year old but again could be genetics so if you find out thanks Aleksxander (talk) 03:09, 3 April 2024 (UTC)
- We need to follow reliable sources, and it's not very common for most actors' birthdays to be public record. Looking again for recent reliable sources, this from yesterday confirms her being 16 years old. So it is a very verifiable fact that she was born around 2007-2008. Beyond this, I don't know if people got mixed up before about how old she was and when. It looks like Godzilla vs. Kong was filmed at the end of 2018, so if it was released in 2021, there may have been some miscommunication about reporting her age at the time of casting, during filming, and when the film was released. Regardless, the sources for 2007-2008 are reliable until another reliable source corrects the record (if needed). Erik (talk | contrib) (ping me) 16:37, 3 April 2024 (UTC)
- for when I said afew other Websites. 1 of the Websites is this Msn Article listed below which says her Birthday is May 1st, 2012 .....

- That source is not MSN, it is Hiptoro being published under MSN. Nothing on the Hiptoro website, which looks like a blog, indicates that it is a reliable source per WP:RS. The Texas newspapers that mention that she is 16 years old are the best sources. Erik (talk | contrib) (ping me) 13:28, 9 April 2024 (UTC)

- She was 9 when she first began her acting career in 2017, however she was not 9 in Godzilla vs Kong, she 11 when filming began in 2019 and 13 when the movie was released in 2021, her being only 4'5 in height is probably what makes people think she was 9. Saturn Award nomination
[edit]Armegon thinks that the lead section should not mention Hottle's Saturn award nomination per this, saying "Already covered in the body". I reverted them citing WP:LEAD, The lead should... summarize the most important points". They've argued, "By that logic, Why not mention everything in the body? The article is too short to cherrypick which the lead should" have. The most basic way we could write the lead section is to say "Kaylee Hottle is an actor" and save the rest for the article body. So why is it okay to name the films but not the award nomination?
Like I assume we are in agreement that her pre-film background, the casting and signing specifics in the films, and where she went to school are not important points. So the reason to include the award nomination should be if it is an important point or not. Do we need to get a WP:3O? Erik (talk | contrib) (ping me) 15:03, 23 December 2024 (UTC)
- Eh, I retract my previous statements. My initial thoughts were that the article is already too small that adding anything else to the lead might be cherrypicking.
- But if this is the only award she’s won so far then it’s probably worth a mention in the lead. Armegon (talk) 15:53, 23 December 2024 (UTC)
Date of birth
[edit]Some reliable sources seem to be reporting the incorrect birth date following her death, like Variety here saying May 1, 2007. This would mean she was 19 when she died. As seen in an earlier discussion (#Her Birthday), I had added an estimated birth year (2007 or 2008) based on her age at the time of an earlier source. However, for whatever reason, May 1, 2007 kept getting re-added, and this is likely what the Variety writer and others have seen. Basically improperly referencing Wikipedia. Her estimated birth years should continue to be kept and is likely to be after July 21, 2007 at this time. Erik (talk | contrib) 16:02, 21 July 2026 (UTC)
- @Erik: I agree with you. From what I can see, basically every reputable source is saying she was 18 and most aren't giving a date of birth. Variety, which would generally be considered a reliable source (but obviously can and inevitably will make mistakes sometimes), gives her birth date as 1 May 2007 (which would make her 19) but also says she was 18. It seems almost certain Variety got this date from Wikipedia, and the date of birth was unsourced prior to this. ~2026-32492-01 (talk) 16:20, 21 July 2026 (UTC)
Kennedyweir98, see this discussion and the earlier one about her DOB. There is some WP:POISONing happening here. Erik (talk | contrib) 17:27, 21 July 2026 (UTC)
- OK, this is getting a bit much. This page is quickly becoming a war of editors flipping the birth year back and forth, but of course, nobody has any sources! Can any editor who wants to "fix" Hottle's DOB please provide an actual, reliable source for the preferred change, instead of just putting it back on the page and hoping everybody else gives up? This is not the way to resolve disputes, or how to build an encyclopedia. I'd really hate to see this page locked so shortly after her death. — Kawnhr (talk) 04:34, 22 July 2026 (UTC)
- Also, we now have an example of a source retracting the false date.

Update: 06/21/26 11:44 a.m. ET: This article and headline were updated to reflect Hottle's birthday as May 1, 2007, making her 19 at the time of her death.

Update: 06/21/26 2:23 p.m. ET: This article and headline have been updated to reflect that police confirmed her age to Newsweek as 18.- Thanks for sharing! This completely invalidates May 1, 2007 as the DOB. I suspect it got added to IMDb at some point and circulated from there. Erik (talk | contrib) 17:25, 22 July 2026 (UTC)
- Can we at least settle on one? Right now she's listed as 18 AND 19 on the same page. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Trollboy665 (talk • contribs) 17:22, 22 July 2026 (UTC)
- Unfortunately most passerby editors are not aware of this DOB confusion. I'll see if I can add a page notice. Erik (talk | contrib) 17:26, 22 July 2026 (UTC)
- Okay, I created Template:Editnotices/Page/Kaylee Hottle to try to give passerby editors a heads-up about this. (They will see it when they enter the edit mode of the article.) I think that's the best we can do, barring some kind of page protection. Erik (talk | contrib) 17:31, 22 July 2026 (UTC)
- @Erik, since we now have the date, could you edit this template accordingly? I would do it but I don't have permission. — Kawnhr (talk) 22:10, 24 July 2026 (UTC)
Credits
[edit]A "Credits" table was added to the article body. With only three credits, and only two of them being major, I am not finding the table worthwhile to have. The two films are already mentioned upfront in the lead section, and there's not a particular claim to fame with the Magnum P.I. episode. Not to mention that it's yet another section repeating the same small amount of information in a different form. Do others think a table is warranted or not? Erik (talk | contrib) 18:10, 21 July 2026 (UTC)
- As much as I find wikitables pleasing to the eye, I don't think it can really be justified in an encyclopedic sense when the article is so short. If it is removed, however, I think the Magnum PI episode title should be put in prose for the sake of completeness. ~2026-32492-01 (talk) 19:07, 21 July 2026 (UTC)
To add to article
[edit]Basic information to add to this article (in order to help make it more properly encyclopedic): Hottle was born to a mother of Korean heritage and an American father of European heritage. Source: https://www.koreaherald.com/article/10816318 ~2026-37846-32 (talk) 03:06, 22 July 2026 (UTC)
MOS:US
[edit]There is a dispute between myself and Jkaharper about using US vs. U.S. in the article's infobox. Jkaharper claims that "it is already established" to use U.S., but this only extends to the past 24 hours. The article did not use either version at all for 2+ years, so per MOS:US, "US" should be used by default "for commonality reasons". It is not like "U.S." sat in the article for a long time before I or others came along to change it, which is how "already established" is supposed to be applied. Other editors are invited to comment about how to apply MOS:US here. Erik (talk | contrib) 18:50, 22 July 2026 (UTC)
- Hi @Erik:, you changed this for no good reason, then reverted it again on multiple occasions, hence starting an edit war, which is disappointing from such an established user as yourself. "U.S." was already being used in the article, and is the norm in over 90% of the Wiki articles for American subjects within their respective infoboxes. " U.S. " is the bog standard norm, not "US", especially when being used as a noun. See here and here for reliable sources that back this up. "In American English, U.S. (with periods) is the more common and traditional abbreviation for the United States, especially when used as a noun. However, US (without periods) is widely accepted and commonly used in publishing, journalism, and as an adjective (e.g., "US policy") to save space.". It should be changed back, as it was the original version and MoS quite clearly states "retain U.S. in American or Canadian English articles in which it is already established". I really don't understand why you need to have a talk page debate about this when it is the most commonly used grammatical format across whole site. --Jkaharper (talk) 19:08, 22 July 2026 (UTC)
- U.S. is more common, especially for “American” articles. My cellphone even autocorrects it to that. You’ll find more articles written that way than not, so I wholeheartedly disagree with you. Joe Vitale 5 (talk) 20:18, 22 July 2026 (UTC)
- To be honest, pointing to how certain publications abbreviate it isn't a good argument. Wikipedia has its own manual of style, and it pretty clearly states that US is preferable. As for U.S. being more common on Wikipedia, this might just coincidentally be the articles you've stumbled across, because I often see "US" in infoboxes and such. I don't really think you can say with any reasonable confidence that it's "90%" of articles. In regard to the manual of style saying to retain U.S. when it's established, I completely understand where you're coming from here and it's pretty clear to me that both you and Erik are arguing from good faith attempts to interpret the manual of style's guidance. You're coming at it from a more literal point of view (U.S. was written before US, therefore it was established first) whereas Erik is interpreting "established" as meaning that the style has been in the article for a significant amount of time throughout several edits and is therefore "the norm" for that article. How long a style has to be there before it's properly "established" I guess is up to interpretation, but I feel like I recall having discussions with longstanding Wikipedia editors that imply they also see "established" like this. ~2026-32492-01 (talk) 20:29, 22 July 2026 (UTC)

Correct Birth Date (March 17, 2008)
[edit]Hello. I am a member of the Deaf community. Kaylee's mother, Ketsi, and her father, Joshua, both confirmed in their official video statements on Instagram and Facebook that Kaylee was 18 years old at the time of her passing on July 21, 2026. The sources listing her as 19 or born in 2007 are incorrect. Her exact date of birth is March 17, 2008. Please help update the page template to reflect her correct age of 18 and her true birth date. ~2026-41044-70 (talk) 15:31, 23 July 2026 (UTC)

- Greetings again! Sorry, but this is all I got from her mom Katsie’s official instagram account ( her mom’s instagram: @syncwithasl). ~2026-41044-70 (talk) 16:35, 23 July 2026 (UTC)
- Ah, I didn't put two and two together that that was her mom's Instagram post. This is fuzzy because self-published sources are generally fine to use as long as it's uncontroversial things someone is writing about themselves.
- Pinging @Erik, @Robby.is.on:, @LaundryPizza03:, @2026-32492-01: here -- I don't think we have a reason to doubt the date her mom listed here, and because of that I think it could be argued that this is a usable source for the date of birth. I don't know if we'd want an RfC or if we can find/use a quick local consensus. TonySt 17:18, 23 July 2026 (UTC)
- Ah, good to know that there is a correct DOB established! Even so... reading WP:DOB, and considering that this figure was borderline notable, maybe it's not worth specifying the DOB at all? Like WP:DOB says, identity theft is a serious ongoing concern (would hate to see this mined for abuse), and it does not really inform readers on an encyclopedic level to specify her DOB here when around 2007-2008 will do. I had a discussion a month or so ago to change another borderline-notable figure's DOB to just the birth year. Food for thought. Erik (talk | contrib) 17:45, 23 July 2026 (UTC)
- I'd say we just take it at face value, and ask no further questions unless reverted by a non-participant. –LaundryPizza03 (dc̄) 19:46, 23 July 2026 (UTC)
- I also we should accept this. It might technically fall short of our standards since it is about a third party, but it's also a third party that the source is intimately familiar with, and it's not an exceptional claim — there's no particular reason to doubt it. Also, looking at this pragmatically, accepting this will put an end to our slow-rolling edit war. As long as there is no DOB listed, well-meaning editors are going to see that as an oversight to fill in, not a deliberate omission (no matter how we try to alert them of that…), and put something there. Since, again, we have no particular reason to doubt the truth of March 17, 2008, we may as well just accept it and save us all a headache. Unless there is a reason to doubt it, of course. — Kawnhr (talk) 21:53, 23 July 2026 (UTC)
- If it's her mother I see no reason to doubt the authenticity of the birth date, and I would support inclusion with a citation to the instagram post. Hemiauchenia (talk) 22:41, 23 July 2026 (UTC)
- Greetings again! Sorry, but this is all I got from her mom Katsie’s official instagram account ( her mom’s instagram: @syncwithasl). ~2026-41044-70 (talk) 16:35, 23 July 2026 (UTC)

- Agreed. I've personally skimmed through Ketsi's IG and there's not a doubt in my mind that it officially belongs to her; so many pictures with Kaylee date so far back. There's very little room for doubt. Kaylee's birthday/age confirmed by her mother seems to be correct. Armegon (talk) 02:23, 24 July 2026 (UTC)
