"Nexus grammar"
[edit]Fly by Night, Cnilep, Favonian, back in 2011 you supported the retention of the stub "Nexus grammar". Less for its content than for its subject, and the possibility of turning it into a decent article on that subject.
Fourteen years later, it was still a stub; and its value, if any, eluded me. In early August, I proposed radically redoing the stub "Nexus grammar"; and nobody objected. (Yes, it's true that only one person, Replayful, supported.) Anyway, I "IAR"ed and replaced it. I'm sure that what I replaced it with has its share of problems, but I hope it's not too bad (and that it's better than what it replaced, let alone the Danish stub Nexus (analyse)).
Two shreds within what I deleted may have some value:
- Rischl, Jørgen (2001). "The Cercle linguistique de Copenhague". ISBN 9783110167351.
- Sigurd, Bengt; Gawrońska, Barbara (1994). "Nexus Grammar (NEXG) for Swedish and English". Working Papers. 42. Lund University, Dept. of Linguistics: 209–224.
Google won't show me the content of the former, and I can't find it elsewhere on the web. I've commented elsewhere on the latter. (In order to view my comment, look there for "Too damn long" and click "show".) -- Hoary (talk) 08:48, 26 September 2025 (UTC)
Two missing sources
[edit]This article says that Jespersen's The Philosophy of Grammar and Analytic Syntax are the main sources for junction/nexus, but then makes virtually no use of the latter. Why so? Simply because I didn't and don't have access to a copy of Analytic Syntax, and I'm too cheap to buy a copy. I hope that some editor equipped with a copy can use it to improve the article.
In early August I somehow got hold of Graffi, Giorgio (2001). 200 Years of Syntax: A Critical Survey. Studies in the History of the Language Sciences 98. Amsterdam: John Benjamins. doi:10.1075/sihols.98. ISBN 90-272-4587-8. (Also ISBN 1-58811-052-4.) I made notes about a small number of passages within it. Shortly thereafter I put aside junction/nexus (in order to deal with Mechanical Turk). Returning to junction/nexus, I could neither make complete sense of my notes nor find Graffi's book. This is rather a mystery. Anyway, descriptions of Graffi's book make it seem promising as a source for this article. Perhaps somebody reading this has access to a university library that has either a copy of the actual book or a more opulent alternative to TWL. -- Hoary (talk) 08:48, 26 September 2025 (UTC)
Influence of Jespersen's junction/nexus
[edit]Further thought (1) on Replayful's earlier post to WT:WikiProject Linguistics:
Like most non-Scandinavians, I am unfortunately unable to read Lars Heltoft's paper "Om neksusbegrebets nødvendighed" (doi:10.7146/nfg.v21i20.23599). If this indeed argues for the concept of neksus, a summary of it might indeed be a worthwhile addition to this article. As it is, in the materials I've been able to find and read, I've found no more than vague suggestions that Jespersen's nexus/neksus influenced this or that other linguist. (There never seems to be a description of how it influenced the linguist.) Although it's very likely that I am ignorantly/lazily ignoring a lot of literature that makes this very clear. -- Hoary (talk) 23:02, 26 September 2025 (UTC)
Wikidata conundrums
[edit]Further thought (2) on Replayful's earlier post to WT:WikiProject Linguistics:
I'm aware of d:Q9049841. This includes nothing from en:Wikipedia; but it groups ru:Нексус и юнкция (i.e. "Nexus and junction"), which could be taken as the much shorter Russian-language equivalent of the article Junction and nexus; two or three stubs that mention Jespersen; pl:Związek główny, about I know not what; and es:Nexo (gramática), not a mere stub but instead an article that I'd guess is about what in English is confusedly lumped together as "conjunction" (i.e. subordination+coordination). But there's no obvious way of sorting out the matter of which articles correspond to which; and I'm reluctant to start any such attempt until the scope of the article Junction and nexus is fixed. (Should it be strictly limited to Jespersen's writings? Or should Jespersen just be taken as the most conspicuous employer of a pair of terms whose exact meaning may have changed somewhat over time?)
