early life clarification please

the first line of his early life, describing his father (who i believe was also a piece of filth murderer...) please clarify the sentence which has a portion missing. it currently reads: "... living through involvement in various throughout New York in the late 1940s"

involvement in various what? from what i've read elsewhere it would give a fuller picture how the subject of the article entered a life of violent/organized crime.
