Proposed update to career section and new surf lifesaving section

[edit]

I have a connection with the subject of this article and would therefore prefer to propose these changes for review by independent editors, rather than edit the article directly.

I would appreciate consideration of an update to the article to reflect the following sourced information.

Santos, CSG and Gladstone LNG

[edit]

The existing career section does not adequately reflect Ellice-Flint's role in Santos's expansion into coal seam gas (CSG) and the development of the CSG-to-LNG strategy that led to the Gladstone LNG (GLNG) project during his period as managing director and CEO (2000–2008).

Relevant facts and sources are:

Ellice-Flint was appointed managing director and CEO of Santos in December 2000 following a 26-year international career with Unocal Corporation. During his tenure, Ellice-Flint pursued a strategy of using the large coal seam gas resources of eastern Australia to support an LNG export industry. An independent retrospective by Matthew Stevens in The Australian on 18 December 2010 described Ellice-Flint as the “father” of Santos's $132 billion export future and reported that, from the beginning of his Santos leadership, he had been working on the idea that Australia's east-coast coal basins could support an export gas industry. Stevens reported that Santos progressively acquired CSG assets under Ellice-Flint as part of that strategy. In 2005, Santos acquired Tipperary Corporation for $612 million, including its Queensland coal tenements and their potential to support Ellice-Flint's LNG proposition. Stevens also reported that Ellice-Flint subsequently pursued Queensland Gas as part of building a sufficiently large gas resource to support an export-focused LNG project. In July 2007, following approximately 18 months of feasibility and site-selection work, Santos announced the Gladstone LNG project. The proposed A$5–7 billion development was designed to convert Queensland CSG into LNG for export from Gladstone. Santos's 2008 announcement of Ellice-Flint's retirement specifically identified Gladstone LNG and the expansion of the company's LNG and CSG interests among the significant developments and initiatives during his leadership.

I suggest that the revised career section give appropriate prominence to Ellice-Flint's role in developing Santos's CSG-to-LNG strategy and the Gladstone LNG project, while leaving the final wording to independent editors.

Surf lifesaving

[edit]

I would also appreciate consideration of a short section summarising Ellice-Flint's Masters surf lifesaving achievements rather than listing individual race results.

The sourced competitive record includes:

multiple State and Australian titles in surf and pool competition; two Masters world titles at the 2016 Lifesaving World Championships; six Masters world titles and 11 medals at the 2022 Lifesaving World Championships in Riccione; a Masters world record in the M70 100 m Obstacle Swim at the 2022 championships; and further Masters world records in the 75–79 age group in 2026.

There is additional biographical information concerning more than 60 years' involvement in surf lifesaving, life membership of Chiton Rocks SLSC, the 2025 SLSA National Medal and involvement with the 2018 Lifesaving World Championships. I have not included these as requested factual additions here because I have not yet located sufficiently strong published sources for each claim.

I would be grateful if an independent editor could review these sources and update the article where appropriate. Smcloughlin360 (talk) 05:46, 7 September 2026 (UTC)Reply

Additional Proposed Update - Education
I have also noticed that my proposed update omitted Ellice-Flint's education and University of New England recognition. I would appreciate consideration of the following additional information:
Ellice-Flint graduated from the University of New England with a Bachelor of Science (Geology) with Honours, and later completed the Advanced Management Program at Harvard Business School. In 2007, the University of New England awarded Ellice-Flint its Distinguished Alumni Award.

I suggest that these qualifications and the 2007 Distinguished Alumni Award be included in a concise Education section. Smcloughlin360 (talk) 03:45, 8 September 2026 (UTC)Reply
