Colepaugh confused with Gimpel?

[edit]

The Retraining with the SD section states that "William Colepaugh... had previously engaged in minor missions for the Abwehr in the pre-war period in Latin America." It later states that Erich Gimpel replaced Codd as Colepaugh's colleague. The Colepaugh article never mentions Latin America while the Gimpel article states that Gimpel became a secret agent while working in Peru at the start of the war. Seems like a mix-up, present since this article's creation, but I'm not certain how to correct it. -- Pemilligan (talk) 21:43, 30 July 2018 (UTC)Reply

Newspaper article

[edit]

I was looking to see if I could find a death notice for Codd and drew a blank, but found this intriguing article in the Catholic Standard in 1950 in which he presents himself as having found himself "during the early stages of the recent Great War, whilst living in Germany..." - oddly omitting how that happened. He seems to have married a German woman and had three children - two died in Germany and a daughter Gertrud was born in Ireland in 1945-46. He wrote he had found it hard to get settled in Ireland after his return, his family were impoverished, and they were not able to emigrate to the Americas; he argued against admitting further European refugees to Ireland as they would find it similarly difficult. He was living in Dublin at that point.

There is an Irish birth record for a Gertrude P Codd, born 1946 in Abbeyleix, mother's maiden name Schonhoff, which fits (though doesn't line up with the name given here). I could not see any evidence for him after 1950, however. Andrew Gray (talk) 19:33, 4 May 2025 (UTC)Reply
