Hero

How come there's only 2 sentences devoted to Hero, one of his most acclaimed and successful films, where he's got the leading role, whereas less significant contributions such as War and Lethal Weapon 4 are given more importance? How come it's not even mentioned in the introduction? And finally, why is it, along with Fearless, mentioned under "American Films" when they are both Chinese? Bad Quote Formatting

So for some reason the quote is down a section and poorly shifts text out of it's way. To see what I'm talking about:

I've tried messing around a little with the quote tags to no success. Also, zooming in and out (in Firefox, ctrl+mouse scroll) gives some odd behavior.

Discrepancy

The article states both that "he only suffered a minor foot injury" and that "he was close to dying during the 2004 tsunami". I haven't checked the sources but it seems like a contradiction. 14.201.246.185 (talk) 23:21, 17 February 2014 (UTC)

Naturalized Ecuadorian citizen

At least at one point, he also has held an Ecuadorian passport. Link in Chinese, as it is from a Taiwan government website, it is credible. Whether he has actually been to Ecuador is another story. In the 1990s, it is not unusual for mainlanders to pay for fake passports to travel abroad. For example, this link in Chinese alleges that basketball player Wang Libin paid tens of thousands of USD to get a Nicaraguan passport to play in Taiwan. Picture rules

Under "Personal life" I see "Li (right) with Mark Zuckerberg". In the infobox he's alone, seems an obvious crop from that picture, also caption implies). Is it implied that Mark is in his personal life, e.g. a friend? Obviously it seems ok to crop, as in the infobox. But SHOULD it be done and they not shown together (even if they provably met)? I'm not too concerned, obviously they met (I'm not saying the picture is faked), and maybe both feel privileged to get their picture taken with each other, this is commonly done for say do co-actors in a movie. Is there any connection, because Mark isn't otherwise mentioned in the main text? Even if friends, a personal relation, maybe not easily provable, I do not think should be stated in that section, but say they are connected through One Foundation, then I guess something on the connection, is ok there, maybe even just the picture. comp.arch (talk) 09:50, 5 October 2016 (UTC)

Lead sentence formatting

Hi, I propose changing the lead sentence to "... is a Chinese, American and Singaporean martial artist and actor." We have already adopted this wording in the articles of Peter Lorre, Marlene Dietrich, Vladimir Horowitz, Max von Sydow, Conrad Veidt, etc. MOS:NATIONALITY says Lorre "is an example of a person who established a career in Europe as a Hungarian, then emigrated to the United States and was naturalized and continued his career, and is thus known as both a Hungarian actor and as an American actor. The use of and again prevents the introduction of ethnicity or birth." I mean, the cases of Li and Lorre are similar, right? Thedarkknightli (talk) 19:30, 19 June 2025 (UTC)

How would that work though? There’s no evidence he holds Chinese citizenship. He only holds Singaporean citizenship. His ethnicity is obviously Chinese, and he will always be Chinese, but ethnicity doesn’t go in the lede as per Wiki guidelines. BlitzKreeg111 (talk) 20:53, 13 July 2025 (UTC)

Collapsing sock-poisoned discussion

I’m confused by the overly defensive stance regarding the current lead, which contains clear grammatical issues, repetitive phrasing, and a tone that feels fan-like rather than encyclopedic. A quick glance at an excerpt reveals several problems:

“Known for his portrayals of Chinese folk heroes, films in which he has appeared have grossed over $2.4 billion worldwide. Born in Beijing, Li began practising martial arts at the age of 8 when he joined the Beijing Wushu Team. After three years of training with wushu teacher Wu Bin, he won his first national championship in 1974, winning the first of five men’s national championships. After his retirement from the sport in 1979, he went on to win great acclaim as an actor, making his debut with the martial arts film Shaolin Temple (1982), which instantly catapulted him to stardom in East Asia. Li had a major breakthrough across Asia with the Once Upon a Time in China film series (1991–1993), in which he portrayed folk hero Wong Fei-hung.”

First, the opening sentence contains a dangling modifier:

“Known for his portrayals of Chinese folk heroes, films in which he has appeared…” This suggests that films, not Li are known for portrayals. Also, he is not "known" for playing "folk heroes."

Second, there’s repetitive phrasing:

“…he won his first national championship in 1974, winning the first of five men’s national championships.” The repetition of “winning” is awkward and redundant.

Third, the progression from Shaolin Temple to Once Upon a Time in China is written in a clumsy and repetitive way; “catapulted him to stardom in East Asia” and “major breakthrough across Asia” are the same thing.

Other issues I noticed:

• “He went on to star in many martial arts films that are regarded as classics of the genre, such as Swordsman II (1992), Fong Sai-yuk (1993) and Fist of Legend (1994). Li starred in his directorial debut film Born to Defence (1986). By the mid-1990s, he was one of the biggest Asian action stars in the world.” → The chronology is disjointed: Born to Defence (1986) is inserted awkwardly after listing 1990s films, and the transition between sentences is abrupt and stylistically clumsy.
• “His movie career in China is credited with reviving wushu in Hong Kong martial arts films during the 1990s, popularising the gun fu subgenre and revitalising the Shaolin Temple. He is also noted for his contribution to making new wuxia films popular internationally during his career.” → This paragraph has multiple problems. For example: Hong Kong was a British territory during the 1990s, so framing this as his “movie career in China” is misleading. “New wuxia films” is apparently an original term in the context and citing listicles or minor lifestyle websites don’t meet requirements. The phrase “one of the biggest Asian action stars in the world” is redundant — “in the world” is unnecessary and moreover, the idea is repetitive, as similar claims are made multiple times throughout the lead.
• “He went on to star in many international action films, including in French cinema with the Luc Besson-produced films Kiss of the Dragon (2001) and Unleashed (2005).” → Describing these films as “French cinema” is misleading. They were English-language co-productions aimed at the international market.
• “He continued to be active in Chinese and Hong Kong cinema, appearing in the critically acclaimed film Hero (2002), Fearless (2006) – which marked his final wushu martial arts film – and The Warlords (2007). For the latter, Li became the highest paid actor in a Chinese-language movie, previously holding the record for his part in Hero.” → Fearless was not his final wushu film; the lead itself soon mentions The Forbidden Kingdom (2008). The claim about being the “highest paid actor” is almost two decades ago and no longer current. The similar point about his one-time highest payment is also made by the 2004 Forbes's list in the end of the lead.
• “After experiencing the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami, Li concentrated on philanthropy.” → This is a chronological distortion. He didn’t "concentrate on philanthropy" until much later.
• “Li was appointed by the International Wushu Federation (IWUF) and the Chinese Wushu Association (CWA) as the ‘Image Ambassador of Wushu’ the same year.” → This is vague and trivial. No year is provided. Most likely outdated long time ago.

NONE of the things you pointed out are “issues”. Firstly, there are no grammatical issues, so stop using that as an excuse to change 90% of the lead without consensus. Secondly, you removed reliable sources and added things that are UNSOURCED, which is not allowed on Wikipedia, hence why your edits have been reverted by not only me, but other users. You can’t just remove reliable sources or long-standing passages because they go against your personal opinions, or change the entire lead without consensus. Finally, everything you removed is backed by reliable sources, such as the part about his “movie career in China”, him “starring in many international action films, including in French cinema”, that “Fearless was his final wushu martial arts film” (The Forbidden Kingdom was NOT a wushu martial arts film, it was a WUXIA martial arts film, and if you actually read the sources, you would know this)”, that he "concentrated on philanthropy" after the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami, and that he “was appointed by the IWUF and CWA as the ‘Image Ambassador of Wushu’ the same year.” You also removed additional passages and sources that deal with his influence. If you can’t recognize an obvious grammatical issue like a dangling modifier, you’re not qualified to edit Wikipedia.

A prime example of “personal opinion” is your hairsplitting over wushu and wuxia, even though it’s clear you don’t understand either term — you wrote “wushu martial arts,” when wushu literally means “martial arts.”

If you're going to accuse other editors of doing things "because they go against your personal opinions" you need to provide diffs to support your claims or you're casting WP:ASPERSIONS. All the edits were made for grammar, style, and to ensure the article reflects current information, as explained point by point in my original post. Which part constitutes “my own biased view”? The personalization and hostility on this talk page are ridiculous—and certainly not initiated by me. The lack of relevant knowledge, whether in grammar or terminology, is even more so. The lead—riddled with basic grammar and style issues that can be uncontroversially identified in any standard guidebook authored not by me—is far from a masterpiece deserving such an aggressive defense. To promote tai chi, in 2012, Li starred in a film titled Tai Chi and co-produced the movie with Chen Kuo-Fu. Li portrayed tai chi master Yang Luchan

The film in question is Tai Chi 0, Li was supposed to star in it, but in the end it was Jayden Yuan who played Yang Luchan.

Suggested Changes:

To promote tai chi, in 2012, Li was supposed to star in the movie Tai Chi 0 and co-produce it with Chen Kuo-Fu. Li was to take the lead role of tai chi master Yang Luchan, but in the end this role was played by another Chinese actor and wushu champion, Jayden Yuan.
