Abdul Hai in 1988 must be wrong?

[edit]

Rev https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Jessore-3&diff=prev&oldid=846088134 by @Worldbruce added the claim that Abdul Hai (Bangladeshi politician) was elected MP for Jessore-3 in 1988. But per his page and https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Naogaon-5, he was elected MP for Naogaon-5 in 1988. The pages also disagree about whether he was a member of the Jatiya Party or JSD (Rab). I know roughly nothing about Bangladesh and don't read Bangla so don't feel up to figuring out what's correct and fixing it, but surely something is wrong here? Thanks for raising this, you are correct that the two Abdul Hais are different. According to the Bengali Wikipedia, the one elected for Jessore-3 is Gazi Abdul Hai. They based that on a source that has no reputation for accuracy or fact checking, and is now dead. It is borne out, however, albeit imperfectly, by an article in The Daily Star that refers to a "former MP" Gazi Abdul Hai, who was still politically active in Jessore in 2005. The Abdul Hai in parliament's records for Jessore-3 is the only plausible match for their Gazi Abdul Hai. A reliable local newspaper, Gramer Kagoj, refers to a Gazi Abdul Hai, a freedom fighter, who died in 2012. That is consistent with another element of the bn.wikipedia biography. Alas, the news article link is dead, and we have only the text fragment in the Google search result to work from. To firmly tie it all together and write a full biography, we'll need to wait for better sources, but for now I've created a stub. --Worldbruce (talk) 20:28, 17 December 2025 (UTC)Reply
