- ... that Zinedine Zidane described football scout Jean Varraud as a "second father" to him?
- Source: Gala.fr - «Ça été quelqu'un qui a beaucoup compté pour moi. J'avais ma famille, mais il était pour moi comme un deuxième papa parce qu'il me parlait comme à son fils»." ["He was someone who meant a lot to me. I had my family, but he was like a second father to me because he spoke to me like he spoke to his son."]
- ALT1: ... that Zinedine Zidane credits football scout Jean Varraud as the person who most influenced his development? Source: Marca - Zinedine, que entonces era Yazid, lo considera la persona que más influyó en su desarrollo futbolístico [Zinedine, who was then Yazid, considers him the person who most influenced his football development]

- There was a suggestion by Crisco 1492 in the discord server for an alt hook (thanks for that btw): ALT2: "...that Jean Varraud helped two of his former teammates by taking them in after they returned from captivity during World War II?" ShadowBallX (talk) 04:55, 24 April 2026 (UTC) Source:
Anciensverts - Il offrira son hospitalité à Ignace Tax et Ferenc Odry à leur retour de captivité lors de la seconde guerre mondiale. [He offered his hospitality to Ignace Tax and Ferenc Odry upon their return from captivity during the Second World War.]and asse-live profile on Ignace Tax - Il ne sera libéré qu’en 1942-43 et sera accueilli comme Ferenc Odry par Jean Varraud. [He was not released until 1942-43 and, like Ferenc Odry, was welcomed by Jean Varraud.]- Drive-by hook suggestion:
- ALT3: ... that Jean Varraud once put football star Zinedine Zidane on cleaning duty?
- Or some variation thereof. Probably worth explaining within the article as well that Zinedine Zidane is a big deal but in the neutral encyclopedic way. Cielquiparle (talk)
@ShadowBallX: New enough (Apr 22), long enough (2000 B). Enough sourcing to pass GNG, and most of it seems to come from reliable sports publications, but can you explain what makes Anciens Verts reliable? It also looks like some phrasing is too close to this source; it might not be enough to be considered copyvio, but I'll say it to be on the safe side. As for the hook, I would definitely go with ALT3, which will be interesting to people who know who Zidane is while also being unusual enough to appeal to others. — Vigilant Cosmic Penguin 🐧 (talk | contribs) 21:44, 1 June 2026 (UTC)
- @Vigilantcosmicpenguin: Sorry for getting back to this so late (tbh I completely forgot about this, and only remembered cause I saw the notifications in my emails while looking for something else). Anciens Verts is moreso a database specifically relating to French football club AS Saint-Étienne, but I noticed it was already being used as a source primarily on en, de, and frwikis. (there's about 110 uses on fr, and around 1/5th of that on both en and de), which is why I included it. ShadowBallX (talk) 02:41, 10 June 2026 (UTC)
- @ShadowBallX: If this is an official website of the FC, then it's reliable. However, it appears to be unaffiliated, which means it's a self-published source that should not be considered reliable. — Vigilant Cosmic Penguin 🐧 (talk | contribs) 03:05, 10 June 2026 (UTC)
- Fair enough, just removed it from the article (of the three uses of it, two were sourced by other things already, while I ended up finding another source for the third). That new source actually gave me the idea for a new hook, if we wanted to add it to the World Cup final set (if not, I'm fine with any of the other hooks being used instead). ALT4: ... that following the 2006 FIFA World Cup final, internet rumours claimed Zinedine Zidane headbutted Marco Materazzi after he mocked the death of Jean Varraud? Source:Magill ShadowBallX (talk) 05:04, 10 June 2026 (UTC)
- ALT3 is still definitely the best option here, and ALT4 probably falls afoul of WP:DYKBLP. Narutolovehinata5 (talk · contributions) 07:38, 12 June 2026 (UTC)
verified for ALT3. The article was paraphrased and the Anciens Verts source was removed. Cunard (talk) 09:28, 15 June 2026 (UTC)
