Several citations in this article name sources so they vaguely look legitimate, but are only wikilinks to the names of those sources - editors basically thumbing their noses saying "you guess the issues and page numbers". TooManyFingers (talk) 22:52, 6 December 2025 (UTC)Reply
@TooManyFingers Thanks for identifying this- I read the Talk Page before addressing the heffffty maintenance tags for this article, and since I'm still not really comfortable with evaluating sources, I might not have otherwise even noticed what you pointed out- indeed, about half the "sourcing" was just newspaper names and publication years.
Luckily, those barely-sources had about a 80% overlap with the endless direct quotes of pure PUFFERY, so, I cut all of that out. I left a few of the Title-Year refs in place where it made sense to retain them, I figured if it's supporting an actual historical happening, that it's better to leave the scant ref info than remove it entirely.
Your comment on this sure helped me BOLDly clean this article the heck up, so thanks! The vast majority of the body paragraphs are large quotations strung together with very little writing besides. Many of the quotes are extremely repetitive and all of them present a strongly positive view of the pianist, representing a possibly skewed presentation of his reception, critique, and legacy. @An Uncommon Potato I razed and burned almost alllll the terribly inappropriate quotes, and geez were you being diplomatic with "strongly positive view" - that was the wildest overt PROMO I've seen in like twenty years as an en.wiki reader.
It's funny because it doesn't feel like as much of a clear and present danger for there to be PROMO about a long dead historical figure, but consistency in applying policies and guidelines to content here is important. I was just amused reflecting on how somehow my ethical "spidey sense" gets all riled up when I see potential PAID/COI content, but culling all this article's PUFFERY didn't have the same effect. I kind of got the feeling this was maybe submitted in this format in the very early days (though I haven't checked, it's kind of a pain in the mobile app to go all the way back in an article's edit history) by someone who was just a really big fan of this musician.
Thanks for the steering advice, and I welcome future visitors to this page to further improve it in any way they see fit - I suspected there was more OVERLINKING I missed, but I was primarily just focused on addressing the three maintenance tags that I formally resolved in this session.
