Proposed expansion of biography and career

[edit]

I have a personal and professional connection to James Majoos and am involved in his music project. I therefore have a conflict of interest regarding this article and am not making these substantive changes directly.

The existing article is currently Stub-class and relatively brief. I have prepared a proposed expansion based on published sources, covering Majoos's early life and education, theatre and television career, fashion work, music career, awards, and current pronouns. I am providing the proposed material below for review by uninvolved editors. I am happy for editors to adapt, shorten, reject, or implement any part of it according to Wikipedia's policies.

Proposed lead

[edit]

James Majoos is an Australian actor and musician. He is best known for portraying Darren Rivers in the Netflix comedy-drama series Heartbreak High (2022–2026), a role for which he was nominated for the AACTA Award for Best Lead Actor in a Drama.[1][2]

Before working in television, Majoos performed in Australian theatre, making his professional stage debut in Yve Blake's musical Fangirls in 2019.[3][4] He was subsequently cast in the title role of the planned Australian production of Everybody's Talking About Jamie, and later appeared in Sydney Theatre Company's production of Grand Horizons.[5][6]

Majoos has also worked in fashion.[7]

Proposed early life and education

[edit]

Majoos was born in Melbourne, Australia, and is the child of South African immigrants.[8][9][10]

He studied musical theatre at the Victorian College of the Arts, graduating with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Music Theatre in 2018.[3]

Proposed career expansion

[edit]

Theatre

[edit]

Majoos made his professional stage debut in 2019 in the world premiere of Yve Blake's musical Fangirls, a co-production of Queensland Theatre and Belvoir, in which he originated the role of Saltypringl.[3][4] He returned to the role for the musical's subsequent Australian tour.[11]

In 2020, Majoos was announced to play Jamie New in the Australian premiere of the West End musical Everybody's Talking About Jamie.[5] The production was scheduled to open at the Sydney Opera House before touring Australia, but was cancelled as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.[5][8]

In 2021, Majoos appeared as Tommy in Sydney Theatre Company's production of Bess Wohl's Grand Horizons, directed by Jessica Arthur at the Roslyn Packer Theatre.[6] The cast also included John Bell and Linda Cropper.[6]

Television

[edit]

Majoos had his breakout screen role as Darren Rivers in Netflix's reimagining of the Australian television series Heartbreak High, which premiered on 14 September 2022.[12][2] Darren, a queer and non-binary student at the fictional Hartley High, is one of the series' central characters.[8][9]

Following its release, the first season spent three weeks in Netflix's global Top 10 and reached the Top 10 in more than 43 countries.[13][14]

Majoos's performance received attention for its portrayal of a Black, queer and non-binary Australian character.[8][9] Majoos said that he was initially concerned that Darren could reproduce stereotypes associated with Black and queer characters, and has discussed the importance of portraying the character's vulnerability alongside their confidence.[8] He also contributed to Darren's characterisation, including suggesting that Darren wear a durag.[8][10]

For his performance in the first season, Majoos was nominated for the 2022 AACTA Award for Best Lead Actor in a Drama.[1] AACTA described Darren as Majoos's "breakout role".[2] He was nominated alongside Mark Coles Smith, Jamie Dornan, Sam Neill and Hugo Weaving.[1][15] Majoos was also named one of the Casting Guild of Australia's Rising Stars in 2022.[16]

Majoos returned as Darren for the second season of Heartbreak High, released in 2024, and the third and final season, released on 25 March 2026.[17][18]

In 2026, Majoos joined the cast of the ABC legal drama The Great White, produced by See-Saw Films. The series, which also stars Hugo Weaving, Miranda Otto and Eamon Farren, is scheduled to premiere in 2027.[19]

Fashion

[edit]

Alongside acting, Majoos has worked in fashion, including editorial work and brand collaborations. In February 2023, he appeared as one of the cover subjects of Vogue Australia, photographed by Joe Brennan.[20] His professional representation lists previous collaborations with brands including Prada, Miu Miu and Calvin Klein.[7]

Music

[edit]

Majoos has pursued music alongside his acting career. In a 2022 interview with Teen Vogue, he discussed making original music as a creative outlet.[8]

In 2026, he began releasing music under the stage name Youngeste, releasing his debut single, "Dance Alone", in September.[21][22]

Proposed personal life update

[edit]

Majoos is of South African heritage and has publicly identified as non-binary.[8][9] He uses he/him pronouns.[23]

Majoos has spoken publicly about his late father and his father's support for his performing career.[8]
