James Harvey Chaplin - Did not have children

[edit]

Hello, I am currently researching Jim Chaplin and would like to suggest that the line about his having a son is inaccurate. This appears to be a mistake on the description of the photograph from the MAA which I will flag to them. ~2026-23649-99 (talk) 14:12, 17 April 2026 (UTC)Reply

@~2026-23649-99: Oh, right, thanks!
Given that he was gay, and that upon death he donated his money to charity, it seems unlikely to me that he had kids, but I just went along with what that description said...
Also, the person in that photograph looks very similar to the J. Chaplin in the other photographs I linked to, so I'm guessing that's actually just him himself, not a same-named son, though either one is possible.
Could you please let me know how they respond? Or, if you'd prefer, I can email them myself and copy their reply here.

Hello, thank you so much for your reply. I work at the MAA and am currently working on the digitisation of the Chaplin collection so I can speak directly with the curator. So far in my research, there is no suggestion of a son, and as you have also said, I think that photograph is of Jim himself. I will let you know if I can clarify and have this changed! Bibliography

[edit]

https://archivesearch.lib.cam.ac.uk/repositories/2/resources/663 includes "Chaplin's bibliography". I emailed CUL Special Collection to ask if it's "a list of works that Chaplin wrote, or a list of ones he referred to in his research", and they replied, "The bibliography is a list of works by Chaplin. However, there is a note by B.W. Smith at the bottom of the page saying 'this list may not be comprehensive'."

Would it be helpful if I request a copy of it to see if it has anything that's missing from § Publications on this page?
