Category:D'Oyly Carte Opera Company people

Rather than watch an edit war continue on the article, can people please discuss this here and come to a consensus before editing further. Given the recent removal of the G&S category, the whole field is now something of a clusterfuck, with articles that were once categorised properly into a related group now no longer having that reflected in the categories. This is a massive backwards step across a whole slew of articles for absolutely zero gain. Regardless of that, edit warring to remove any category connection to G&S seems to be an even worse step. Discussion please - no-one wants to see anyone get blocked over one of the more pointless areas of WP, so please stop the edit warring. - SchroCat (talk) 07:41, 9 January 2026 (UTC)

James Albery was not an executive or permanent employee of the D'Oyly Carte Opera Company, therefore should NOT be included, otherwise this becomes a loose WP:OCASSOC issue, which is what we were avoiding at Wikipedia:Categories for discussion/Log/2025 December 16#Category:People associated with Gilbert and Sullivan. Including him here just creates the same issue we have avoided there. --woodensuperman 08:44, 9 January 2026 (UTC)

Per my request here, I'm waiting for the guideline that says people must be "executive or permanent employee"s to be included. This seems to be an overly narrow definition, rather than anything beneficial. If there is no such guideline, then Albery should be able to remain. - SchroCat (talk) 11:45, 9 January 2026 (UTC)

If they're not an employee of the company, they are only "associated with" the company, and thus proscribed per WP:OCASSOC. Any association needs to be defined. --woodensuperman 12:17, 9 January 2026 (UTC)

That's not true, either in real life or on Wiki, I think. People employed on short contracts, people given commissions of work are more than just "associated": they are financially and legally connected to the company in the same way people with longer contracts or executives are. Again, please show a working guideline that backs up what you are saying, because OCASSOC isn't saying what you want it to say. - SchroCat (talk) 12:27, 9 January 2026 (UTC)

Also, don't forget that writing a play for a company is not a WP:DEFINING characteristic of that person whereas being a director of that company is. --woodensuperman 14:15, 9 January 2026 (UTC)

I disagree with Woodensuperman. People who are particularly remembered for writing a work for Richard D'Oyly Carte during the time that he was producing the Gilbert and Sullivan Operas are either [[Category: D'Oyly Carte Opera Company people]], or they should be in some other subcatgory of [[Category:Gilbert and Sullivan]]. It is a defining characteristic of their careers, and they would likely not be notable without this association. It is neither subjective nor vague. Albery's best remembered work is remembered because it was a companion piece to The Sorcerer and H.M.S. Pinafore. -- Ssilvers (talk) 15:21, 9 January 2026 (UTC)
