Improve the article

I just noticed this article was a redirect. It was surprising to see a very important and massively notable character in movie industry was a redirect due to copy vio, and nobody fixed it. I restored a stub version which is likely to be copy vio free (according to earwig's tool), but needs a lot of work. Tame (talk) 19:05, 3 September 2021 (UTC)

Hello!

I would like to bring up some issues with this edit, which restored some content in the infobox that I removed. On Wikipedia, we have to provide reliable sources for all content. I do not believe there are any reliable sources describing Lo'ak, Neteyam and Tuk as Jake's biological nephews and niece, but I am absolutely open to being wrong. Also, this description is never given in the films. From a rational, scientific point of view, yes, there's a case to be made that he is both father and uncle to his children, since his avatar was grown from his brother's DNA, but that doesn't mean we should put that in the article. It's original research, it is us "figuring out" a situation in the source material and then describing it in a way that no sources do.

If there is a published article from a reliable source that makes the argument, we can use that and cite it. Otherwise, we need do what the films and all the articles do—list Lo'ak, Neteyam and Tuk as Jake's children. They are his children, legally and socially, and even if he is also their biological uncle, it's not relevant to the plot of the films. If we follow MOS:IN-U, we find that we should not place undue emphasis on character traits that are "unimportant to the plot or its interpretation". In other words, the biological-uncle argument could be true within the fictional world of Avatar, but it has no bearing on a reader or viewer's ability to understand the films, and thus there is no reason to include it.

I suggest that the Sully children be described as simply sons and daughters in the infobox. OrdinaryOtter (talk) 23:23, 5 April 2026 (UTC)
