This looks an interesting article and already a Did You Know. I look forward to seeing if it can meets the Good Article criteria. I will start a full review shortly. simongraham (talk) 06:03, 13 August 2025 (UTC)
- @Simongraham I'll get to your comments in a few! Finals are coming up so I'll be quite swamped. Hope you'll understand. :) Arconning (talk) 11:40, 15 August 2025 (UTC)
Comments
[edit]- First, some general comments.
- Overall, the standard of the article is high. The nominator has already had a number of GA, and even FA nominations, successfully reviewed and passed.
- It is noticeably shorter than other Good Articles, with 512 words of readable prose.
- The lead is appropriately long at 149 words.
- Authorship is 67.7% from the nominator with contributions from 12 other editors.
- It is currently assessed as a C class article.
- Although not a GA criteria, suggest adding ALT text to the image for accessibility.
- Added. :)
Criteria
[edit]The six good article criteria:
- It is reasonable well written.
- the prose is clear, concise, and understandable to an appropriately broad audience; spelling and grammar are correct;
- The writing is clear and appropriate.
- The comma in "He then studied in France, and further practiced the sport." Is superfluous without a subject after the conjunction.
Done - I also believe it is "practised" rather than "practiced", but this may be a regional English variation.
- Regional English variation indeed.
- The clause beginning "Though" in "He was later invited to be part of the first Cambodian team at an Olympic Games, doing so at the 1956 Summer Olympics held mostly in Melbourne, Australia.Though, the equestrian events for the Summer Games were held in Stockholm, Sweden, due to Australian regulations on horses at the time that required a six-month pre-shipment quarantine." is not a complete sentence. Suggest something like "He was later invited to be part of the first Cambodian team at an Olympic Games, joining the team for the 1956 Summer Olympics. Although most of the games were held in Melbourne, Australia, due to Australian regulations on horses at the time that required a six-month pre-shipment quarantine, the the equestrian events were held in Stockholm, Sweden."
Done
- it complies with the Manual of Style guidelines for lead, layout and word choice.
- It seems to comply with the Manuals of Style.
- the prose is clear, concise, and understandable to an appropriately broad audience; spelling and grammar are correct;
- It is factually accurate and verifiable.
- it contains a reference section, presented in accordance with the layout style guideline;
- A reference section is included, with sources listed.
- all inline citations are from reliable sources;
- Sources are a combination of olympedia and FEI for his sports career and newspapers for his political career.
- All sources are credible and appropriate (although the choice of a New Jersey local newspaper is interesting).
- it contains no original research;
- All relevant statements have inline citations.
- Spot checks:
- 2 states that "Cambodia made its first Olympic appearance at the Equestrian Olympic Games of 1956, in Stockholm, although it did not compete at the Melbourne Olympics that year." I suggest it is worth including the second point in the text.
Done - 5 confirms that Ghanty led the take-over of the embassy and other claims in the earlier sentences in the paragraph.
- 6 confirms Sihanouk's requests and demands.
- 2 states that "Cambodia made its first Olympic appearance at the Equestrian Olympic Games of 1956, in Stockholm, although it did not compete at the Melbourne Olympics that year." I suggest it is worth including the second point in the text.
- it contains no copyright violations nor plagiarism;
- Earwig gives a 4.8% chance of copyright violation. This shows it is unlikely, the highest overlap seems to information about dates and places, which is not a concern.
- it contains a reference section, presented in accordance with the layout style guideline;
- It is broad in its coverage
- it addresses the main aspects of the topic.
- The article is rather brief and a glance at the literature shows there is more that could be covered. For example, the Peking Review covered the embassy incident in some detail. If you are good at non-English sources, Huor's Sista resan till till Phnom Penh and Pomonti and Thion's Des courtisans aux partisans La crise cambodgienne may be worth a look as both are available online.
Done Let me know if I've added enough... Only used the English source as I'm not that tech-savvy in translating those types of sources. - Suggest it may be worth including something about the wider context of both Cambodia's first appearance at the Olympics and the situation in 1976 surrounding the protests.
Done - I note that his confession is available online.
Done I'll add a further reading section...

- it addresses the main aspects of the topic.
- It has a neutral point of view.
- it represents viewpoints fairly and without editorial bias, giving due weight to different points of view.
- The article seems generally balanced. It would be improved with some resources that provided the Cambodian perspective, but I do not believe that this necessarily is a GA requirement.
