Nationality in lead

[edit]

Hi all,

Since this has caused a lot of back-and-forthing amongst several editors on this article, I am taking this matter here. With regards to Hadjar's nationality in the opening sentence, we have two options in line with consensus set in this discussion at WP:F1—that trivial secondary nationalities belong in the personal life section, not the lead:

  1. Isack Alexandre Hadjar is a French and Algerian racing driver, [...] (current)
  2. Isack Alexandre Hadjar is a French racing driver, [...]

Notes worth considering:

  • Hadjar was born and raised in France, and has only competed under the French flag.
    • The latter point could change in Formula One, as we have no confirmation he will continue under the French flag.
  • Hadjar's entire family is Algerian—to the best of my knowledge—and continue to live there.
  • To state the obvious, this is controversial; not only because of the back-and-forth reverts on this article, including questionable edit summaries , but also because of Islamophobia in France.
  • If it is decided that both should be mentioned, once he debuts in F1, the opening sentence will be expanded as such: "[...] who competes under the French/Algerian flag in Formula One [...]", per Max Verstappen, Nico Rosberg, Alex Albon, etc.

Please keep your replies concise, and feel free to add any comments I missed in the list above. MB2437 23:10, 23 December 2024 (UTC)Reply

  • I support Option 1. As mentioned previously by others, it is relevant information in the same vein with other multiple-citizen racers like Max Verstappen or Alex Albon themselves.
I do want to check though, I am the user who added IPA pronunciation to Isack Hadjar sometime back in 2024. However, said IPA is currently the French pronunciation of his name: pronounced [i.zak a.d͡ʒaʁ]. Should an Arabic pronunciation be provided alongside French to balance things out? Arabic IPA: pronounced [ʔis.ħaːq ħa.d͡ʒar].
I was thinking this will be following the precedence in Oliver Goethe's article containing both Danish and German pronunciations. Alternatively we could go with having NO pronunciation at all, similar to Nico Rosberg with no German or Finnish IPA guides. Any advice on this? Thanks! Is the Arabic pronunciation actually any different? I removed the "French" from before the pronunciation so it would be catch-all, remain concise and avoid any controversy. That being said, it is still relatively concise for Goethe with the lang parameter in use. I assume the Rosberg case is more that nobody has taken the time to add it. Yes, the (Modern Standard) Arabic pronunciation is very different. For instance, the 'H' in his name is silent in French, but in Arabic it is pronounced ħ (ح) (see: Voiceless pharyngeal fricative) which is a sort of 'H'. I'm thinking of formatting his name to this:
  1. Arabic: إسحاق حجار, romanized: Isḥāq Ḥajar
The Arabic script will instead go into the footnotes, while both French and Arabic IPA pronunciations are included in his name. Arabic spelling is already provided in Infobox person. I think this keeps the page concise. It also preserves the "French and Algerian" order. But let me know what you think! User:Kalathei95 03:11, 16 April 2025 (UTC)Reply
Looks good to me—great suggestion! MB2437 03:21, 16 April 2025 (UTC)Reply
Apologies to necro an old thread, but do you mind changing "a French and Algerian racing driver who is contracted to compete under the French flag in Formula One for Red Bull Racing" to "a French and Algerian driver who competes under a French racing license. He is contracted to drive in Formula One for Red Bull Racing." I don't think Hadjar's contract would require him to get a French racing license specifically. Mostly a flow thing. Will be changed to "who competes" next week. MB2437 04:54, 26 February 2026 (UTC)Reply

@French Thutmose III: there is no mention of "Lebanese" in the source that you added. M.Bitton (talk) 10:32, 17 May 2025 (UTC)Reply

Hello @M.Bitton, thank you for mentionning it, mea culpa!
I will add these two references: France 24 and Le Parisien.

2) https://www.leparisien.fr/sports/formule-1/petit-prost-zebulon-boule-denergie-qui-est-isack-hadjar-le-nouveau-pilote-francais-en-f1-20-12-2024-N5VUVXC6GRFLHFKKNLTYVSRS7A.php (unfortunately paywall, but I have access to it if you want the entire article) French Thutmose III (talk) 11:20, 17 May 2025 (UTC)Reply
@French Thutmose III: the sources don't describe his family as "Algerian-Lebanese". That's clearly your WP:OR that you're injecting into a WP:BLP. Second, his father's PHD is irrelevant to his biography. M.Bitton (talk) 11:24, 17 May 2025 (UTC)Reply

Sir, I do presume you have not read the second article (paywall) if you assert that his mother was not of Algerian and Lebanese descent. Here is the article from Le Parisien without paywall: https://archive.is/20241220142851/https://www.leparisien.fr/sports/formule-1/petit-prost-zebulon-boule-denergie-qui-est-isack-hadjar-le-nouveau-pilote-francais-en-f1-20-12-2024-N5VUVXC6GRFLHFKKNLTYVSRS7A.php

Tell me if you need any translation into French.

I agree with you for the PhD. French Thutmose III (talk) 11:32, 17 May 2025 (UTC)Reply

I assume that you haven't read my comment.
Which source describe his family as "Algerian-Lebanese"? M.Bitton (talk) 11:36, 17 May 2025 (UTC)Reply
His mother is clearly described as "libano-algérienne" (lit.'Lebanese-Algerian') in both France 24 and Le Parisien. MB2437 16:21, 17 May 2025 (UTC)Reply
Comment This does not mean we can describe his family as Lebanese, solely his mother. MB2437 16:22, 17 May 2025 (UTC)Reply
