Roguelike?

[edit]

Let's see what the Roguelike article has to say

  • traditionally characterized by a dungeon crawl
  • procedurally generated levels
  • turn-based gameplay
  • grid-based movement
  • permanent death of the player character
  • Most roguelikes are based on a high fantasy narrative

Of all of these items I would argue that only turn-based gameplay and permanent death apply to Ironcast at all. Which makes a very weak case for the characterization, as both can be found in a lot of other genres as well. In particular, I don't see the "procedurally generated levels": The player has to complete "Missions" in order to progress, but as far as I can tell the choice of Missions available at any given point always seems a subset of the same hardcoded pool.
In particular the complete absence of any spatial character movement, the system of "Missions" as an equivalent of game levels, and the focus on the match-3 gameplay makes it wildly different from what I would expect in a "Roguelike" game.
I found the categorization as "match-3 RPG", mentioned somwhere in the citations, a much more fitting description.
