It needs to be reworked, because there are mistakes.

Some keywords for the content:

Irmos is a melodic model used for the meter of the ode which are organized according to canons.
These models represent also the eight mode system of the octoechos, the hymn genre was part of the early tropologion fragments which were written for a monastic reform (papyrus). The odes of the canon were homiletic poetry concerning the canticles or biblical odes, they should replace the custom of the cathedral rite to recite the biblical texts, but also be monastic counterpart to the Constantinopolitan homiletic genre kontakion. Please do not only mention John of Damascus and Co but also the Georgian Iadgari fragments!
Since the Studites reform irmoi had been collected in a separate hymn book which was like the sticherarion one of the first fully notated hymn books. These books can be ordered according to the nine or odes or according to the eight modes of octoechos.
