Proposed lead (replaces current lead)[edit]Irasis Acharya is an Indian politician from Odisha and a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). He has been a member of the Odisha Legislative Assembly from Bhatli since June 2024.[1] He was previously the state president of the Odisha unit of the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM), the youth wing of the BJP, and served as the BJP's Odisha state secretary from 2023 to 2025.[2][3][4] Proposed new sections[edit]Education[edit]According to his election affidavit, Acharya holds a Master of Laws degree from Cardiff University in the United Kingdom, awarded in 2013.[5] He was listed as an assistant professor at KIIT University in a 2017 institutional report, having joined in September 2013.[6] Political career[edit]Acharya was president of the Odisha unit of the BJYM by 2021, a position he continued to hold in 2023.[2][3] He was separately appointed a state secretary of the BJP's Odisha unit in 2023;[4] he does not appear on the party's list of office-bearers announced in October 2025, indicating the term ran from 2023 to 2025.[7] Arrests and cases[edit]In 2018, police in Bargarh arrested Acharya in connection with a firing incident at Bhatli on 1 June 2018, under sections of the Indian Penal Code including section 302 and provisions of the Arms Act. Acharya said the arrest was politically motivated, and BJYM activists protested against it.[2] In November 2021, police arrested him in Bhatli ahead of a visit by Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik to Bargarh.[2] On 28 February 2023, Acharya and 21 other BJYM activists were arrested in Bhubaneswar after a clash with police during a BJYM rally protesting the state's law and order situation following the killing of minister Naba Das.[3][8] Police registered FIR 135[5] and booked them under several sections of the Indian Penal Code, including section 307,[8] and about 20 police personnel were reported injured.[3] BJYM leaders said police had used excessive force and that the charges were false.[9] The Orissa High Court granted bail on 20 April 2023 and Acharya was released from Jharpada Special Jail on 22 April 2023.[3] In his 2024 election affidavit, Acharya declared six pending criminal cases and no convictions.[5] In January 2025, he was acquitted in the 2018 Bhatli firing case.[10][11] Elections[edit]Acharya contested the 2019 Odisha Legislative Assembly election from Bhatli as the BJP candidate. He received 75,434 votes (around 41%) and lost to Susanta Singh of the Biju Janata Dal by 23,232 votes.[12] He contested Bhatli again in the 2024 election and won with 107,508 votes (around 55%), defeating Susanta Singh by 27,892 votes.[13][14] He took office on 4 June 2024.[1] References to add (reference list)[edit]

- Hello, thank you for refraining from directly editing the article. I wanted to let you know that you incorrectly filed this edit request as a semi-protected edit request rather than a COI edit request. I've gone ahead and fixed it for you, as well as collapsing the proposed changes for readablity (you can see them by clicking [show]). I have no opinion on the changes themselves. —Leaf.Sheap ⇖ /.°°.\ ⇗ (They•Them) 19:56, 28 September 2026 (UTC)
