I helped condense the lead section so it’s more of a quick skim, broad contextual introduction into the beetle. Previously, it was 2-3 large paragraphs and difficult for the average reader to grasp a quick snippet of what the Wikipedia page plans to expand on. I also added to the mating section through a subheading about parental care. I talked about how the pine engraver beetle forms pair bonds driven by male parental care and paternity assurance. The role of these males is further seen as they help females remove debris during egg-laying. LLM-style text + verification/sourcing

The article currently has tags for possibly containing LLM text. I found numerous sections which are written in a non-encyclopedic tone and/or contain strong assertions which lack verifiable sources. Examples: "When humans attempt to ...burn down their habitat, they actually reproduce even more." "Ips pini are actually more resistant to the heat and chemicals..."(also flagged "citation needed").

Suggestion: Adjust the tone to be more in line with encyclopedia standards, fact check these claims using academic entomology/forestry sources, and either reference them or delete/rewrite. I'd be glad to assist with editing particular sections. Sparks19923 (talk) 20:20, 20 January 2026 (UTC)

Strengthening verifiability and structural formatting for Ips pini

I have expanded the lead and behavior sections of the Ips pini article in an effort to remedy its verifiability and lack of sourcing issues. Highlights of what I have added include: Discussion of Sourcing: Removed unsourced statements and replaced them with inline citations from verified sources such as Journal of Chemical Ecology, Forest Ecology and Management, and PNAS. Discussion of pheromone research from scientific journals (specifically Miller et al.2001 and Seybold et al. 1995) that documents geographic variation in production of ipsdienol, one of the primary chemotaxonomic characteristics used to identify this species. Corrected and improved information linking I. pini to fire and drought disturbance using Santoro (2001) and Raffa (2013) as sources for claims related to competition. Ensured consistent usage of {{cite journal}}: Empty citation (help) and {{cite web}}: Empty citation (help) templates. Added units (mm, cm) after numbers per MoS. Roadmap to GA-status

This article meets all criteria found at WP: GA4 except those noted below based on Good article criteria for Biological species. Suggestions for collaborative improvement by other editors are welcome.

1. Mating and Parental Care

Sections on mating behavior and parental care are very good, but need inline references to meet WP: V.

• Enhancement: Accurately incorporate information from research on "sperm displacement" and "last-male paternity."
• Source for inline refs: In particular, the data from Lissemore, F. M. (1997). "Frass clearing by male pine engraver beetles (Ips pini; Scolytidae): paternal care or paternal assurance?". Behavioral Ecology. 8 (3): 318–325. doi:10.1093/beheco/8.3.318. needs to be incorporated as inline references for statements about behavior.

2. Life Cycle and Phenology

Sections on morphology of life stages are good but lacks information about timing of stages and relationship to weather.

• Enhancement: Provide the amount of time required for eggs, larvae, and pupae to develop at different temperatures (degree-days).
• Graphics: Obtain or create an image of species specific gallery patterns (primary tool used by foresters to identify this species).

3. Economic and Management Impact

Currently the article only observationally describes what damage this species causes to trees. Need a section titled Management and Control to make this article meet standards of an encyclopedia topic on a forest pest.

• Enhancement: Summarize management information found on USDA Forest Service and Montana DNRC websites about silvicultural thinning and management of slash, and use of ipsdienol baited traps.

4. Symbiotic relationships

Refers to its symbiotic relationship with a "blue stain fungus," but which fungus(es)?

• Enhancement: Provide information on fungal symbionts (species of Ophiostoma and Ceratocystis) and describe how fungus is carried on the beetle's exoskeleton or in mycangia. == 5.
