Stable compound

- I think I5O−12 is worth mentioning as an example of a (stable) polyiodate containing iodine(III). While it is formally derivable via condensation of [IIIIO4]5− and [IVO3]− units, we should be careful not to imply it contains isolated [IIIIO4]5− ions.
- The section on polyiodates in the just-published review Kang, Yuwei; Hu, Chun-Li; Zhang, Cai-Chun; Mao, Jiang-Gao (2026). "Recent Progress in Iodate Based Nonlinear Optical Crystals". Chemical Science. doi:10.1039/D5SC10104B. describes I5O−12 as:
an I3+ ion ... coordinated by four O atoms from distinct [IVO3]− groups, forming a square-planar [IIIIO4]5− unit. All four [IVO3]− groups are situated on the same side of this square plane, collectively assembling into a novel bowl-shaped polymeric unit [IIII(IVO3)4]−.
- The paper you've cited makes this clear this is a
discrete
I5O−12 ion: it's only polymeric in the sense that it's a polyiodate. A third paper (doi:10.1002/anie.202504673) provides a name for the ion:tetraiodatoiodate(III)
