About the Olympiad
In September 2016 the opening ceremony of the first International Olympiad of Metropolises was held in Moscow. The contest was organized on the initiative of the Mayor of Moscow.
The words “Moscow is the land of hospitality, the land of discoveries” became a motto for 173 high school students from 18 countries of the world. Teams of young experts in mathematics, informatics, chemistry and physics came to the Russian capital from 22 biggest cities and capitals from all over the world: Abu-Dhabi, Almaty, Astana, Belgrade, Berlin, Bishkek, Budapest, Jakarta, Düsseldorf, Yerevan, Leipzig, Milan, Minsk, New-Delhi, Beijing, Riga, St. Petersburg, Sofia, Tallinn, Tel-Aviv, Helsinki, and Moscow that hosted the event.
Participants of the Olympiad of Metropolises were students of 14 to 18 years of age. Every city was presented by 8 students and team leaders who were translating the tasks into the native language of the team.
Physics and chemistry contests consisted of theoretical and experimental rounds. Mathematics and informatics sections included solving of problems. The complexity of tasks was comparable to traditional international Olympiads.
In addition to the main contests the students took part in an exciting multi-disciplinary blitz contest. Teams simultaneously were solving tasks in mathematics, informatics, chemistry and physics. Before coming to the Olympiad every team sent their tasks for each of the four disciplines of the final school exam level. The blitz contest tasks were selected from them. The results of the blitz contest were not included into the final score.
The organizers prepared an exciting cultural program. The students took part in a walking tour Moscow Quest round the city, they learnt about the history and cultural heritage of Russia and its capital, visited museums, exhibitions and festivities devoted to the Day of Moscow.
Chemistry
The competition consists of Theoretical and Experimental rounds.
Students will be asked to solve 5 problems in theoretical round, and 2 problems in experimental round. The estimated duration of each round is 4 hours.
Participants will be provided with two versions of tasks: in English and in student's mother tongue.
Requirements and tasks examples.
Physics
The competition consists of Theoretical and Experimental rounds.
Students will be asked to solve 3 problems in theoretical round, and 1 problem in experimental round. The estimated duration of each round is 5 hours.
Participants will be provided with two versions of tasks: in English and in student's mother tongue.
Requirements and tasks examples.
Informatics
The competition consists of two rounds of practice.
Students will be asked to solve 4 problems in each round. The estimated duration of each round is 4 hours.
Participants will be provided with two versions of tasks: in English and in student's mother tongue.
Requirements and tasks examples.
The updated contestant image for VirtualBox, which will be used during the rounds on informatics is available here: https://yadi.sk/d/jsbKAZEbufmGK. If you don't log in automatically, choose username 'contestant' and press 'Enter'.
Mathematics
The Contest includes two rounds and it takes place in two consecutive days. On each day of the Contest the examination starts in the morning and lasts for 4,5 hours. Each of two papers consists of 3 problems. A participant can receive a maximum of seven points for each problem. Each participant may receive the problems in two languages (in English and in student's mother tongue). The format and the level of tasks correspond to the level of the International Mathematical Olympiad and other major international competitions, such as the Romanian Masters or International Zhautykov Olympiad.
Themes of problems are in line with the All-Russian Olympiad, the Tournament of Towns and the Moscow Mathematical Olympiad. The problems cover various fields of school mathematics (mostly geometry, number theory, algebra and combinatorics). The problems do not require knowledge of higher mathematics. Generally, all the problems have short solutions. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Laratracy (talk • contribs) 06:10, 5 August 2017 (UTC)

Southeast Asian Mathematical Olympiad
[edit]Southeast Asian Mathematical Olympiad http://www.seamo-official.org/
SASMO is a math olympiad contest that stretches not only the brightest students but is aimed at instilling confidence for all students.
The contest is designed in a way to make every student love Math again. SASMO contest fits nicely into the school curriculum with a high focus on non routine problem sums – preparing for SASMO contest helps students prepare for the PSLE and O-Level exams.
Created in 2006, SASMO is one of largest math contests in Asia. It has expanded from 155 local participants in 2006 to more than 20 000 participants from 19 countries in SASMO 2016. More than 100 schools from Singapore took part in SASMO 2016.
The SASMO Team with the support of Advisory Council spend countless hours carefully developing contest papers which will touch on both school and Olympiad maths. This combined effort allow participants to do better compared to pure-Olympiad papers, since they are familiar with some questions and are able to put on their thinking caps for others, bringing out the inner mathematician in them.
With realistic and high standards, SASMO contests aim to stretch the untapped thinking potential of the student population, their participation in SASMO will help them improve in school mathematics as well as higher order thinking skills (HOTS). — Preceding unsigned comment added by Laratracy (talk • contribs) 07:07, 5 August 2017 (UTC)

[edit]Draft:List of Olympiads
[edit]See Wikipedia:Miscellany for deletion/Draft:List of Olympiads and note the suggestion that the draft contains information that may be worth merging into this article. I think it might be slightly more complicated, but a worthy idea to consider. --SmokeyJoe (talk) 20:29, 7 August 2018 (UTC)
Inclusion criteria
[edit]Many olympiads have been added to and later removed from this list due to concerns over notability. There is no universally agreed upon set of olympiads that count as "international science olympiads", but I hope we can come to a consensus for some criteria to consider before adding or removing olympiads from this list. Here's my proposal:
- Must be truly international: not limited to a single country or group of countries (e.g. EGMO wouldn't count)
- Must be scientific: this term may be interpreted broadly to include mathematics and the social sciences, but in my opinion doesn't include history, philosophy, or geography. If these are to be included, perhaps this article should be retitled "International Olympiad".
- Must be an olympiad: this excludes science fairs like ISEF and buzzer-based competitions
Also, all of the agreed-upon olympiads are restricted to high school or middle school students, so that should probably be a requirement.
In addition to being an international science olympiad, for inclusion in this list olympiad should meet the following notability criteria:
- Must have run at least 5 times. Every now and then new olympiads are started but fail to get off the ground. Thus, new olympiads need to prove themselves before being added to this list.
- Must be notable enough to have their own Wikipedia article
Curious to hear what others think about this list. Djkauffman (talk) 15:11, 19 August 2022 (UTC)
- This strikes me as a good set of criteria. I'd add on to the "truly international" point, and say that each participating country must send 1-2 teams of no more than 6 students. Perhaps there are some Olympiads that allow teams of 8 or so, as I'm not familiar with each one, but something like the International History Olympiad, which doesn't have true national teams and which is attended by tens if not hundreds of American students each year, should absolutely not count. I'd otherwise be inclined to allow competitions like iGeo or IPO but your argument is reasonable.
- It may also be worthwhile to add a note to the article on the nebulous nature of the criteria defining an ISO. I think this is a useful article to have because many people likely wonder about the most recognized international academic competitions, and the olympiads are similar enough that it is quite reasonable to categorize them under the same label, but "International Science Olympiads" aren't actually a thing, in the sense that there's no definition of them and the organizers of the IMO couldn't care less about the IBO. 42Q7 (talk) 20:34, 31 October 2022 (UTC)
- There is another point, which may seem so blindingly obvious to experienced Wikipedians as not to need mentioning, but is not always clear to new editors, so it is worth mentioning here. Of course, in order to be included any olympiad must satisfy Wikipedia's notability guidelines, and, just as with most list articles, one which has not been demonstrated to be notable enough to be the subject of a Wikipedia article must not be included. - There have been many attempts to add Economics by single purpose users, but it is not commonly recognized, is not notable, and thus does not meet the requirements to be listed. - MrOllie (talk) 15:56, 14 July 2024 (UTC)
- This is just wrong. It is way more recognized than many of the olympiads, in fact, this year, it will have one of the most countries in participation. Loola103 (talk) 03:17, 17 July 2024 (UTC)
- Economics is far more broader and more important than some of those in this list such as the astrophysics & astronomy olympiad. You can't have olympiads such as AI listed which is a subset of CS and its taught at the graduate level and not have economics, which is the primary factor of who to vote in elections and what people get in charge of whole countries. More people and countries tune in to the economics competition rather than geography and earth science and some countries get you admitted to its best public universities by just having a medal at the IEO. Please note that in recent times many for-profit independent educational consultancies have created their own International Olympiads to give their applicants a leg up in the admissions process. These programs are not legitimate or verified.
For example, the Genius Olympiad was started in 2011 by [https://terraed.org/aboutUs.html Terra Science and Education] based in Syracuse, NY, which sells pay-for-play publishing in their open-access journals, including the International Journal of High School Research. Crimson Education, a for-profit company selling admissions and test prep services, also has launched the unverified [https://www.literatureolympiad.org/ Literature Olympiad]. - Thanks, but the purpose of a Wikipedia article is not to editorialize or try to warn people like this, certainly not without third-party sourcing like articles in major newspapers. But thanks for your note, we'll be sure to keep an eye out for people trying to add links like these. - MrOllie (talk) 17:58, 30 April 2025 (UTC)
Inclusion of IOAI as a science Olympiad
[edit]IOAI just celebrated its second edition and is now the fastest growing olympiad, I really think it deserves to be added to the list. 191.156.224.44 (talk) 17:45, 23 August 2025 (UTC)
- No, per the above discussions. Also, 'fastest growing' is nothing to crow about. If a group has 1 member making it 2 means it has doubled in size! MrOllie (talk) 18:02, 23 August 2025 (UTC)
- I think the comment about 1 vs 2 is a bit of a disingenuous hyperbole (there is a considerable base of participation, as I will outline later). Even despite being a relatively "new" competition, I would argue IOAI definitely meets the notability criteria for an International Olympiad.
- I managed to dig up this article from the Times of India about it, as well as this article from Tuoi Tre (for context, both of these newspapers are high-circulating in their respective countries)
- There are also blog articles from reputable universities about it, e.g. this one from the University of Warsaw and this one from NTU.
- I would also like to point out that the IOAI already meets the precedents set by other Olympiads on the list. For example, IOAI's ~56 contestant countries exceeds the IOL's 43 countries and the IPO's 52 countries. Also, some other Olympiads seem to have comparatively less external coverage (e.g. the Wikipedia article for the IOAA mentions no third-party sources)

Why is IOAI not there on the list yet???!
[edit]It is high time that the International Olympiad in Artificial Intelligence (IOAI) be officially recognized among the International Science Olympiads. The IOAI surpasses several established Olympiads in terms of the number of participating countries and has been confirmed for the 2026 and 2027 editions, bringing its total to four, which meets the typical minimum requirement of running for at least four to five years. The Olympiad has received endorsement and patronage from UNESCO and enjoys strong backing from leading universities——including MIT, Tsinghua, NUS, NTU, HSE, and MBZUAI——as well as major technology companies that support and sponsor the event. This combination of academic and industrial support reflects the IOAI’s global relevance and credibility, and a simple search confirms its growing popularity and recognition in AI education and innovation worldwide. Addition of International Economics Olympiad
[edit]Add "International Economics Olympiad" in the table under the section "International Science Olympiads", with the following details:
Science: "International Economics Olympiad"
Symbol: "IEO"
Year: "since 2018"
Host Country (For 2024): "Hong Kong SAR"
Host Country (For 2025): "Azerbaijan"
More details can be found at ecolymp.org <ecolymp.org>
The International Economics Olympiad (IEO) has become one of the biggest international science olympiads in the world and I think it should be added to the list. The competition had 68 participating countries this year, which is already more than the IPO, iGeo, IOL and IOAA. I also found this article from TVP World, this article from Kazinform and this article from MSN about the IEO, all published within the past week. The competition has received endorsements from world-famous professors, economists and Nobel Prize laureates, including Eric Maskin, Daron Acemoglu, Gregory Mankiw, Laurence Kotlikoff and Gita Gopinath. I can see that requests to add the IEO have been denied in the past, but as of 2025, the competition is definitely more notable, relevant and popular than many of the olympiads currently listed. Let me know what you think. Aquaobject (talk) 03:26, 31 August 2025 (UTC)
Issues about this article
[edit]As per Wikipedia's encyclopedic policies, I've added a disputed neutrality tag to this article.
A lot of founders and organisations have a vested interest in promoting their Olympiad through this article, which is definitely not in the spirit of Wikipedia.
It's also extremely difficult to define what an "International Science Olympiad" is, which is fuelling a lot of controversy regarding which Olympiads should be added/removed. Lankyliver🧠 (talk / contribs) 00:50, 4 September 2025 (UTC)
- NPOV tags are for specific issues of neutrality which are at least theoretically actionable. I don't see that here. MrOllie (talk) 01:04, 4 September 2025 (UTC)
- How so? I'd like the NPOV tag to be a warning for first-time readers to take the article's content with a grain of salt. That way the value of using the article for pure promotion is somewhat reduced. Lankyliver🧠 (talk / contribs) 01:41, 4 September 2025 (UTC)
- That's not what NPOV tags are for. I suggest you re-read the instructions at {{NPOV}} - they specifically say the tag should not be used in that way. - MrOllie (talk) 02:07, 4 September 2025 (UTC)
- Now I see. Thanks for pointing that out.
- NPOV tag policy aside, my concerns about the article still stand. At the very least, I'd like to see some way to warn first-time readers about the issues of the article. Lankyliver🧠 (talk / contribs) 02:26, 4 September 2025 (UTC)
- I am not aware of any way to do such a thing that would not be a clear violation of Wikipedia's policies. MrOllie (talk) 02:30, 4 September 2025 (UTC)

Change International Astronomy Olympiad "1996-2023" to "since 1996" and set the 2024 and 2025 countries both to Bangladesh http://www.issp.ac.ru/iao/2024/ia24ib_i.html http://www.issp.ac.ru/iao/2025/ Alarion239 (talk) 19:32, 2 December 2025 (UTC)
Not done – Both references are fake.
Or my browser just can't take it, so before the edit, someone must verify these sources.

Question: Well I was able to find the websites via the Internet Archive, but I have doubts over the reliability of the websites, as they look self-published. What's the difference between this and the International Olympiad on Astronomy and Astrophysics? Alpha Beta Delta Lambda (talk) 18:35, 11 December 2025 (UTC)
- Honestly I don't know, I tried a different computer, and the websites appear really old and outdated.
r f q i i talk! 23:08, 11 December 2025 (UTC) - They are very outdated and one doesn't exist. r f q i i talk! 02:06, 13 December 2025 (UTC)
Done I verified the sources, and indeed the IAO is distinct from the IOAA, so I've made the change. However, I'm wondering if International Astronomy Olympiad should be in the table at all, since it doesn't have its own article and thus doesn't meet the notability guidelines established in the "Inclusion criteria" section of this talk page. TimSmit (talk) 19:28, 18 December 2025 (UTC)
- Agreed, so that part should just be completely scrapped. r f q i i talk! 23:05, 18 December 2025 (UTC)

Please add the International Economics Olympiad (IEO) in this wikipedia site. It's the best, most rigorous economics competition for High School students and for some countries, getting a medal there automatically admits you to its public universities. Remove ISTEMO and ICO
[edit]I don't know how to edit wikipedia, but ISTEMO and ICO have no place in this list. They are like just cash cows where parents pay money so their kid can have a vacation and feel nice that they went to an "international olympiad". All the other olympiads in this list have countries send official, government-sponsored delegations (usually limited to 4-8 students) and feature intense competition. The same cannot be said about these two.
@MrOllie, thoughts? DeliMagnolia (talk) 19:23, 5 February 2026 (UTC)
- I agree. These were recently added so I have reverted that addition. MrOllie (talk) 19:37, 5 February 2026 (UTC)
- Thanks! I see you have also reverted IOAI, which to me seems legitimate (at least I know my own country sends a government-sponsored delegation, and it seems like the rest do as well). Obviously it's not on the level of the well established olympiads yet, it is a very young contest, so maybe one can wait for a bit longer before including it. I would include it, but I don't feel strongly either way I guess. DeliMagnolia (talk) 18:07, 6 February 2026 (UTC)
Criteria
[edit]@MrOllie what is the criteria that you are using for "commonly recognized"? Because this page does not define one, it does not even have proper sources. The IEO is one of the most known international olympiads and has great participation from even more countries than others that are on this list, and it fullfills the standards that the others have set in this realm. If you think it should not be included, please provide thoughtful and source-based criteria that should be applied for all olympiads on this list. Best regards, Arcstur (talk) 22:17, 9 February 2026 (UTC)
- If you'd like to propose eliminating the list as unsourced, we can talk about that - but you're doing the opposite, you're adding a little known event that doesn't belong here, as many other new accounts before you have tried to do. In this case the topic isn't even commonly considered a science. MrOllie (talk) 22:38, 9 February 2026 (UTC)
- @MrOllie How is IEO a "little known event", what criteria are you using to distinguish it from the others on the list? If 50+ countries is "not commonly recognized" and a "little event" then multiple olympiads on the list would need to be removed.
- The first phrase in Economics article is "Economics is a social science", if you don't think it's a science you can think that as your personal opinion, but it is indeed science.
- If you don't provide any better arguments than that then either IEO should be on the list or others should be removed. Arcstur (talk) 01:14, 10 February 2026 (UTC)
- For one thing, the others on this list have longer track records and many more independent sources. For another, they're actually about science. The actual content of the IEO includes quizzes on personal finance and business case studies. That is clearly not science. It's not even Economics by most definitions. MrOllie (talk) 01:28, 10 February 2026 (UTC)
- An olympiad is not a pure replication of the scientific method or what scientists in that area do.
- Being around for more time is an argument but not a good one, things can be more or less reconigzable independent of time passed, as is the case of the IEO against other olympiads there.
- Please don't use vague arguments that are false, like "many more independent sources". The iGEO for example has only 1 source in its article besides their official websites. Arcstur (talk) 02:07, 10 February 2026 (UTC)

- @MrOllie, look, I appreciate that you are taking care of this page by reverting spam, vandalism, and inclusion of weird olympiads. I would like to ask for you to reconsider adding IEO again, it's a respected, serious and recognized olympiad.
- I would also like to propose a simple criteria of "has a wikipedia article" to be included on this list and being about a science topic, instead of us trying to define on a talk page what is a worthy olympiad or not. The international olympiads ecosystem unfortunately, until now, does not have a "governing body" or some form of official accreditation for us to use. Therefor I propose the article existance, as that satisfies wikipedia's notorierity policy.
- Best regards, Arcstur (talk) 02:14, 17 February 2026 (UTC)
- I see no evidence that it is 'respected', nor do I think the mere fact that you have written a questionably notable article means that it should be included here - particularly when it is not actually a *science* competition, which is supposed to be the topic of this article. MrOllie (talk) 02:48, 17 February 2026 (UTC)
- Well, this back and forth does not seem to be going anywhere.
- Although Economics is science and the IEO is a science competition, you seem to disregard that while letting IPO (philosophy) and IOI (informatics, programming) on the list.
- At the same time, claming the article is "questionably notable" while it has more independent sources and has better quality than other articles on the list, like IBO with the {{Promotional}} tag and 0 independent sources or even IAO that does not even have an article!
- So, we have advanced nothing in proposing a proper criteria set for this list. Arcstur (talk) 03:47, 17 February 2026 (UTC)

@Djkauffman, @42Q7 and @JBW: hello, I'm trying to discuss a proper criteria set for this list with @MrOllie, using the discussion about IEO's inclusion as a basis example. I'm pinging you given that you were discussing criteria for this list in 2022, feel free to join the discussion if you would like to, and of course @MrOllie feel free to continue the discussion as well.
Based on WP:LISTV#INC, the previous thread and this one, I propose the following criteria:
- Must be an olympiad
- Must have its wikipedia article
- Must be about an academic topic (that way we stop arguing about what is science and what is not, as I really think IPO should be here)
- Must be truly international
- Must have run at least 5 times
- Must have at least 15 participating countries/territories (which is a small demand, but could help us ignore early olympiads)
What are your thoughts on these?
Afterwards we can discuss if a olympiad should be removed and if we can include others like IEO, which is what I want to include.
Best regards, Arcstur (talk) 04:05, 17 February 2026 (UTC)
- Hi @Arcstur,
- I agree with these criteria, though I would prefer to increase the teams requirement to 50 countries. Even newer olympiads like IEO meet this bar.
- Also, I think we should consider renaming this article to "International Olympiad" or "List of International Olympiads" if we're going to include all academic topics. You're right that there isn't a bright line between science and non-science. Djkauffman (talk) 06:29, 17 February 2026 (UTC)
- Hi @Djkauffman, thanks for your input. I also agree that we can increase the teams requirement, but a little lower, since IOL and iGEO don't reach 50 countries (43 and 47 in 2025, respectively). How about 30 or 40?
- About renaming, I agree, as even "international science olympiad" is not a well defined thing per se. I would like a qualifier for olympiad like "student olympiad" or "knowledge olympiad" (like we do in Brazil: pt:Olimpíadas de Conhecimento). How about that? Arcstur (talk) 21:17, 17 February 2026 (UTC)
- Hi @Arcstur and @Djkauffman,
- All of this seems reasonable. I like the idea of simply calling this "List of International Olympiads" or "List of International Academic Olympiads." We can also add a requirement that each olympiad has a limit of students per country -- 1 team of 4-6 students (maybe some olympiads are slightly outside that) per country. The IOL allows two teams per country which is also fine. I don't see a good reason why the IEO should be excluded (although maybe someone else does). — Preceding unsigned comment added by 42Q7 (talk • contribs) 01:52, 19 February 2026 (UTC)
- Hi, I’d like to slightly revise this to make the criteria more effective. Let me know what you think:
- Must identify itself as an Olympiad and be organized by an independent non-profit international body. (Note 1)
- Must have a Wikipedia article.
- Must not serve primarily as a regional qualifying competition for another Olympiad. (Note 2)
- Must have official national selection systems rather than open registration. (Note 1)
- Must compete through national teams or representatives of up to 8 members. (Note 1)
- Must be primarily for secondary-school students. (Note 3)
- Must be about an academic topic.
- Must use substantial original problem-solving, analysis, or practical work (not solely based on multiple-choice testing). (Note 1)
- Must have run at least 3 times. (Note 4)
- Must have at least 40 participating countries/territories. (Note 5)
- Some explanation:
- Note 1. This way we can exclude clearly non-ISO competitions (commercially run or non-selective) like ISO by SOF, ISTEMO, ISOC or Copernicus Olympiad.
- Note 2. This is intended to exclude “regional Olympiads” like “European” or “Asia-Pacific.”
- Note 3. As usually required.
- Note 4. As we look at the history of this list, all Olympiads founded in the 21st century were 1 to 3 years old when added. Three years seems to be the appropriate minimum standard to be an ISO.
- Note 5. As discussed in this thread. This will probably be the best criterion for distinguishing “truly international” ISO. WikipedianWith23Letters (talk) 14:17, 4 June 2026 (UTC)
- @WikipedianWith23Letters I guess this is very complex and can easily exclude olympiads from the list (note 5). I'm also against using independent non-profit international body, some olympiads are just too informal to have something verifiable like this.
- I liked the phrasing "must identify itself as an Olympiad". And I liked the "national selection systems" as well.
- Anyways, I'm worried to complexify too much. Could you check the existing olympiads on the list with your criteria? I believe they will satisfy the requirements I've put earlier, which are simpler. Arcstur (talk) 02:39, 13 June 2026 (UTC)
- @Arcstur Thank you for your reply.
- The currently listed Olympiads do meet your criteria, but my main intention was to reduce subjectiveness as much as possible.
- However, I understand your concern about overcomplicating them, so I propose to remove “organized by non-profit,” “up to 8 members,” and “substantial original problem-solving.”
- Also, I confirmed that only the IESO doesn’t meet my 40 countries criteria, which I revised. I still keep the threshold somewhat high because there are not truly international, localized (like Ibro-American) Olympiads hovering at around 20 countries.
- Please let me know your thoughts!
- Must identify itself as an Olympiad.
- Must have a Wikipedia article.
- Must have official national selection systems rather than open registration.
- Must be primarily for secondary-school students.
- Must be about an academic topic.
- Must have run at least 3 times.
- Must have at least 30 participating countries/territories.
- Must not serve primarily as a regional qualifying competition for another Olympiad.

- Hi, I’d like to slightly revise this to make the criteria more effective. Let me know what you think:
- @Djkauffman and @42Q7, thanks for your comments. So let's rename it to "International Olympiad"? As of about 1 team of 4-6 students, that could be somewhat what defines an olympiad (could be derived from the olympiad criteria). Arcstur (talk) 02:06, 26 February 2026 (UTC)
