[edit]The second line of the summary states: "In contrast an exterior gateway protocol is for determining network reachability between autonomous systems (AS) and makes use of IGPs to resolve route within an AS." However, the first line does not define the use of IGP. If "the use of IGPs is to resolve routes within an autonomous system" then the article should say so explicitly in the first line or paragraph fo the summary.
Also, may we please have an example of its use and purpose? Stephen Charles Thompson (talk)

The link near the beginning to exterior gateway protocol is not really correct as in the text it's a reference to the general class of exterior gateway protocols and there is no such page yet. Instead it points to the page for the specific protocol Exterior Gateway Protocol. Unfortunately the class of protocols and the specific protocol have the same name. -- Dougher (talk) 22:08, 17 January 2013 (UTC) exterior gateway protocol has been split into two pages which does help clarify things here.
Explaining Naming
[edit]The article does not explain the name. I remember when having my first contact with IGPs, I always wondered, why they are called "gateway" protocols and not routing protocols. A longstanding suggestion at Wikipedia:WikiProject_Computing/Computer_networking_task_force#Tasks suggested there was misplaced material in this article. I have moved this to Distance-vector routing protocol and Link-state routing protocol. Now this article is similar in scope to Exterior gateway protocol. It is possible both can be merged into Routing protocol but I don't see any urgency to this. ~Kvng (talk) 21:08, 4 August 2022 (UTC)
- There really should be a single place that explains the EGP–IGP split, including the history (which none of these articles treat well), which is necessary for understanding why the split still exists.
