New-user confusion

The install command is often confusing for new users because it installs files rather than software packages. It would be useful to cite an article which explains the difference and points to some helpful resources. JamesYoungman (talk) 17:11, 10 May 2025 (UTC)Reply

Amen ... IMO installing a file makes no sense. Hence the name of this program is confusing. I think the name is 'install' since it is often used as part of a software package install process. But it does not encompass the entirety of a software package install process. It's a file copy utility that is particularly useful during software package install.
