History - post 2000 - energy prices

"Sectors that raise prices significantly as a result of higher fossil fuel prices include transportation, food, and shipping." - What is the difference between shipping and transportation? Are there really no other, a wee bit more diverse examples out of, as per previously mentioned, virtually all possibke sectors? Extraprase (talk) 15:14, 22 June 2026 (UTC)

Normally, 'transportation' would be understand as movement of people, while 'shipping' would be movement of goods. Perhaps, it makes sense to update the working and wikilink them for clarity? Vgbypw (talk) 10:11, 23 June 2026 (UTC)

@Vgbypw Shippment indeed probably is the movement of goods only. Or more precisely, transportation of goods. Here is part of the problem - the word transportation. But the other part I see is that contextually here if it isnt one but two things, they are pretty much the same. Of all sectors of economy, modern life, why say "nearly all" and then list three and two of them are oranges and tangerines? Extraprase (talk) 20:05, 23 June 2026 (UTC)

I'd say that those two sectors (transportation of people - think gasoline for cars and aviation fuel for jets - and shipping of goods - think HFO for ships) are quite different yet both depend heavily on the oil price. Which sectors would you propose to list that would be similarly impacted by the energy prices?

PS: You raise a valid point. I read the cited source article and it doesn't distinct between these two sectors, so we definitely need to reword this or find another source. Vgbypw (talk) 06:57, 24 June 2026 (UTC)
