Latest comment: 7 months ago by Abdullah1099 in topic Infinity Galaxy and Cosmic Owl are the same galaxy

what is it's official name.

[edit]

I have seen everywhere that this new galaxy is called Infinity Galaxy so i named it and i can't find any name till now in any catalog. I had seen people using other names. Abdullah1099 (talk) 13:33, 27 July 2025 (UTC)Reply

A bit early for its own page?

[edit]

There is exactly one published paper about this, with another submitted preprint (https://arxiv.org/abs/2506.15619 - I've added a cite for this, as it's the source for the "there are three black holes" claim). Seems a bit early to have a dedicated article about it? To User:Abdullah1099's question above: the name comes from the single published paper on it, it has no other identifier, as it is not in any catalogs. - Parejkoj (talk) 19:37, 29 July 2025 (UTC)Reply

I know but this article really needed a page. That's why i had made one. You can add more reference and improve the article. It's not early bro It's on time. Abdullah1099 (talk) 01:41, 30 July 2025 (UTC)Reply
Thank you for improving the page Abdullah1099 (talk) 01:43, 30 July 2025 (UTC)Reply
I was borderline about pushing it to draft, however there is a bit of indepth coverage of it aside from the published paper. Space and Nasa for instance, with more avaliable through Google searches. I think there is enough for WP:GNG, but I would like to see some of references added to some of the uncited claims, e.g., that the galaxy is in the constellation Sextans. TarnishedPathtalk 03:05, 30 July 2025 (UTC)Reply
yeah, but that constellation was not added by me. I will add the correct constellation based on the RA and DEC Coordinates Abdullah1099 (talk) 03:08, 30 July 2025 (UTC)Reply
Don't do it based on the coordinates. Remove it if that is the only sourcing that can be provided. If it is to stay we need sourcing which explicitly states the galaxy is in the constenation. TarnishedPathtalk 03:09, 30 July 2025 (UTC)Reply
Ok, That's also an option Abdullah1099 (talk) 03:10, 30 July 2025 (UTC)Reply
No, It really is the Sextans constellation according to this reference
[1] Abdullah1099 (talk) 03:29, 30 July 2025 (UTC)Reply
Well it can be added then I guess. TarnishedPathtalk 03:55, 30 July 2025 (UTC)Reply
Added Abdullah1099 (talk) 04:04, 30 July 2025 (UTC)Reply
Why did you initially say the galaxy was in the constellation of Cetus when you created the article? -- 65.93.183.181 (talk) 04:51, 31 July 2025 (UTC)Reply
It was a mistake bro. Abdullah1099 (talk) 07:53, 31 July 2025 (UTC)Reply
Can you upload that NIRcam image, to use in the infobox? The licensing link seems to say this is PD-USGOV -- 65.93.183.181 (talk) 04:40, 1 August 2025 (UTC)Reply
Bro, I don't know how to make images in Wikipedia. Abdullah1099 (talk) 04:42, 1 August 2025 (UTC)Reply
I'll look at it after work. TarnishedPathtalk 05:21, 1 August 2025 (UTC)Reply
Bro can you tell me the process Abdullah1099 (talk) 05:24, 1 August 2025 (UTC)Reply
There's a wizard for assisting you, WP:Files for Upload and Wikipedia:File upload wizard -- 65.93.183.181 (talk) 07:21, 1 August 2025 (UTC)Reply
Thanks Abdullah1099 (talk) 07:25, 1 August 2025 (UTC)Reply
Depends on what sort of license an image is released under.
If it's under a free license, such a lot of Creative Commons License, you can upload it to Commons at commons.wikimedia.org. Please be aware though that you can't upload anything there. Anything that is copyrighted without a free license, you shouldn't attempt to upload and doing so can get yourself blocked. TarnishedPathtalk 05:36, 1 August 2025 (UTC)Reply
Ok Abdullah1099 (talk) 05:39, 1 August 2025 (UTC)Reply
Ps, I see other editors have already uploaded images to commons. See https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?search=Infinity+Galaxy&title=Special%3AMediaSearch&type=image. TarnishedPathtalk 05:38, 1 August 2025 (UTC)Reply
I already added the image Abdullah1099 (talk) 05:41, 1 August 2025 (UTC)Reply
I noticed. I was too busy creating a category for the images in commons and you beat me to it. TarnishedPathtalk 05:45, 1 August 2025 (UTC)Reply
what Abdullah1099 (talk) 05:46, 1 August 2025 (UTC)Reply
commons:Category:Infinity Galaxy. I just created it. TarnishedPathtalk 05:47, 1 August 2025 (UTC)Reply
Good, Thanks for the work Abdullah1099 (talk) 05:49, 1 August 2025 (UTC)Reply
Also, the discovery and significance section need more citation/s. References already in the article probably cover it, however they need to be added into those sections. TarnishedPathtalk 03:08, 30 July 2025 (UTC)Reply
I will see that Abdullah1099 (talk) 03:09, 30 July 2025 (UTC)Reply
I think i had added enough reference now to complete the request. If you need more then i will find it. Abdullah1099 (talk) 03:34, 30 July 2025 (UTC)Reply
The second paragraph of the Black Holes section needs at least one citation. Each paragraph should have at least one citation. If you can add that, I will have a check to see that every claim is supported after work. TarnishedPathtalk 04:00, 30 July 2025 (UTC)Reply
I will see Abdullah1099 (talk) 04:04, 30 July 2025 (UTC)Reply
I think that Arxiv reference is enough. I am also still finding more Abdullah1099 (talk) 04:10, 30 July 2025 (UTC)Reply
Arxiv provides preprints. Please provide links to the journal articles once they are published. TarnishedPathtalk 05:46, 1 August 2025 (UTC)Reply
What is pre print Abdullah1099 (talk) 05:48, 1 August 2025 (UTC)Reply
A journal article which has been submitted to a peer review journal, but hasn't been published by the peer reviewed journal as yet. We don't consider them to be as reliable until they published by a journal. TarnishedPathtalk 05:50, 1 August 2025 (UTC)Reply
Ok i will see. But this seems to me very complicated situation Abdullah1099 (talk) 05:51, 1 August 2025 (UTC)Reply
Have a read of WP:PREPRINT, which is part of our policy on reliable sourcing, which I also suggest you read. TarnishedPathtalk 05:53, 1 August 2025 (UTC)Reply
Ok. But i have one more question. What is this HotCat and AMC Mode Abdullah1099 (talk) 05:54, 1 August 2025 (UTC)Reply
Read commons:Help:Gadget-HotCat. TarnishedPathtalk 06:12, 1 August 2025 (UTC)Reply
I think i had done what you wanted. Abdullah1099 (talk) 04:16, 30 July 2025 (UTC)Reply
For correction that 50m/s is derivative from Anton Petrov Sir video which is present in External links section. Abdullah1099 (talk) 04:18, 30 July 2025 (UTC)Reply

Infinity Galaxy and Cosmic Owl are the same galaxy

[edit]

They both have the exact same redshift, shape, and RA/Dec location. These separate articles must be merged. Nrco0e (talkcontribs) 01:40, 16 December 2025 (UTC)Reply

Notifying @Abdullah1099, TarnishedPath, and Praemonitus: Nrco0e (talkcontribs) 01:44, 16 December 2025 (UTC)Reply
But the research paper shows fully different properties and the images shown are totally different. Any sources to tell both are same Abdullah1099 (talk) 02:55, 16 December 2025 (UTC)Reply
Look at the Cosmic Owl page now. OogwayPass (talk) 03:01, 16 December 2025 (UTC)Reply
@Nrco0e any comments on the topic Abdullah1099 (talk) 03:11, 16 December 2025 (UTC)Reply
They literally have the exact same space for the third black hole and have the same features down to the neighboring galaxy. OogwayPass (talk) 02:54, 16 December 2025 (UTC)Reply
They are not same thing. At the time of creation i also thought this Cosmic Owl & Infinity Galaxy are same thing but later it becomes apparent as both show some different properties Abdullah1099 (talk) 03:02, 16 December 2025 (UTC)Reply
No? Look at the image on the Cosmic Owl page. Same merging zone, same ring structure, even same neighboring galaxy to the left. They are the same. What are the odds that two (incredibly rare) ring galaxy mergers appear in a similar location with almost identical properties? OogwayPass (talk) 03:03, 16 December 2025 (UTC)Reply
Yeah, After seeing the image, I also now think both are same galaxy with different names Abdullah1099 (talk) 03:06, 16 December 2025 (UTC)Reply
Good that you’re on the same page as us. OogwayPass (talk) 03:07, 16 December 2025 (UTC)Reply
Ok, But why the people show it differently Abdullah1099 (talk) 03:09, 16 December 2025 (UTC)Reply
@Abdullah1099 It is likely the original article creator made the article not knowing that the name they used was just a synonym for an already extant galaxy. XiphosuraTalkEdits 03:24, 16 December 2025 (UTC)Reply
@Abdullah1099: The Infinity Galaxy paper says: Finally, we note that the ∞ galaxy was independently discovered by M. Li et al. (2025), who dub the galaxy the Cosmic Owl. Nrco0e (talkcontribs) 03:31, 16 December 2025 (UTC)Reply
I've looked both names up on Google Scholar and I get more scholary results for "Infinite Galaxy". The name "Cosmic Owl" has only been used by one paper. Nrco0e (talkcontribs) 03:40, 16 December 2025 (UTC)Reply
So, What's the next step @Nrco0e. I think both are same galaxy. So merging them is a good idea Abdullah1099 (talk) 03:44, 16 December 2025 (UTC)Reply
Yup, 100% merging "Cosmic Owl" to "Infinity Galaxy". Nrco0e (talkcontribs) 03:46, 16 December 2025 (UTC)Reply
Then ok, but i think we should also wait for the comment from @Praemonitus and @TarnishedPath. Abdullah1099 (talk) 03:55, 16 December 2025 (UTC)Reply
Not sure why you need my input, but I support the merge. Praemonitus (talk) 04:03, 16 December 2025 (UTC)Reply
Oh, This means Cosmic Owl is the secondary name of Infinity Galaxy Abdullah1099 (talk) 03:41, 16 December 2025 (UTC)Reply
It looks like @SevenSpheres, has merged Cosmic Owl to Infinity Galaxy with their edits at Special:Diff/1327792518 and Special:Diff/1327792437. Not sure if that was premature given this discussion had only just started. That aside, I agree that the merge is necessary and looking at the state of Cosmic Owl prior to being merged I agree that Infinity Galaxy is the logical target. TarnishedPathtalk 04:06, 16 December 2025 (UTC)Reply
To clarify, there are multiple reasons to prefer the title "Infinity Galaxy":
  • As mentioned above, it seems to be the more common name.
  • The "Infinity Galaxy" paper was published first; while both papers appeared on arXiv at around the same time, the "Cosmic Owl" paper is still a preprint.
  • "Cosmic Owl" is an ambiguous term: Cosmic Owl (disambiguation)
SevenSpheres (talk) 04:12, 16 December 2025 (UTC)Reply
Yeah, Good to merge both articles but i think it too before to merged both as the talk just started Abdullah1099 (talk) 04:18, 16 December 2025 (UTC)Reply
