This is not what I was told about the ICT on the blu-ray.com forum.

What I was told there was that the ICT would prevent playback except through an HDMI connector. Whether this meant merely that the data must leave the player through an HDMI connector or whether the entire path to and including the TV set displaying the data must be HDMI was not clarified.

This affects Blu-ray disc players that offer outputs other than HDMI: it prevents them from playing discs with this token through the non-HDMI outputs.

Indeed, what I actually asked about was an error message displayable by a player I had just ordered, which was clearly documented in the online manual as meaning that the disc could only be output through the HDMI connector.

I found this alarming because the players found online as currently available almost invariably offer WiFi connectivity and updateable firmware. This means that the firmware could be updated to not display any content, from any source (DVD, media file, streaming service) except through an HDMI port, even though the device has alternative outputs.

I don't know about anyone else, but I really don't want a device I pay for to lose capabilities just because it is in the best interest of the manufacturer and/or publishers of the media.

Of course, I suppose I could have been the victim of a practical joke.
