Antarctic notothenioids

[edit]

The characterization of Antarctic notothenioids as "icefishes" is inaccurate. "Icefish" is a term specific to members of the family Channichythidae, who were named "icefishes" due to the fact that they lack hemoglobin (the protein that makes blood red). In addition, members of the family Nototheniidae (which have red blood that contains hemoglobin) are sometimes referred to in the literature as "cod icefishes."
