Removal of COI tag

Mobyjaws56, while I appreciate you declaring your COI with this article, that doesn't justify the removal of the maintenance tag. As per Wikipedia:Conflict of interest your continued editing on the articles that you have a COI on is strongly discouraged. Your best approach is to propose changes on the article talk page. • removes first-paragraph résumé/list structure;
• reduces promotional and evaluative phrasing;
• consolidates biographical material into prose;
• keeps factual claims tied to the existing citations;
• removes some unsourced or weakly sourced detail;
• preserves the filmography, awards and honours sections in a more neutral format.

If an uninvolved editor considers the rewrite acceptable, could they please replace the article text with the version below and consider whether the résumé-style tag can be removed? I understand that the COI tag should remain or be removed only at the discretion of uninvolved editors.

Ian David Darling AO is an Australian documentary film director, producer and philanthropist. He is associated with Shark Island Productions and the Shark Island Institute in Sydney, Australia.

Darling's films as director or producer include Alone Across Australia, In The Company of Actors, The Oasis, Paul Kelly - Stories of Me, The Final Quarter and The Pool. He has also worked as an executive producer on films including 2040, The Bleeding Edge, Unrest, On the Record and Paper & Glue.

Outside film production, Darling has held roles with Documentary Australia, Good Pitch Australia, the Sydney Theatre Company and philanthropic organisations. He was appointed an Officer of the Order of Australia in 2018 for service to documentary film production, the performing arts, education, community engagement and social welfare organisations through philanthropy.

Career

Darling's first documentary, Woodstock for Capitalists, was released in 2001 and featured investors Warren Buffett and Charlie Munger. In 2004 he directed and produced Alone Across Australia, a documentary about adventurer Jon Muir.

His 2007 film In The Company of Actors followed the Sydney Theatre Company production of Hedda Gabler from rehearsal in Sydney to performances in New York. The cast included Cate Blanchett, Hugo Weaving and Robyn Nevin.

Darling directed and produced The Oasis, a 2008 documentary about youth homelessness in Australia. The film was followed by an outreach campaign and was cited in connection with a national inquiry into youth homelessness. The Oasis was later named among "Australia's Top 50 Philanthropic Gifts of All Time". Related works included Polly and Me, Wall Boy, The Soldier and Life After The Oasis.

In 2012 Darling directed and produced Paul Kelly - Stories of Me, a documentary about Australian singer-songwriter Paul Kelly. The film opened at the Melbourne International Film Festival and won the Film Critics Circle of Australia award for best documentary.

Darling directed The Final Quarter, a 2019 documentary about the final years of Australian rules footballer Adam Goodes' playing career. The film used archival material from television, radio and newspapers to examine public discussion about Goodes during that period. Darling also directed the music video for Paul Kelly's song "Every Day My Mother's Voice", which was released for Mother's Day in 2019.

In 2021 Darling co-wrote and appeared in the play The Twins with Greg Fleet and Sarah Butler. The production opened at the Adelaide Fringe Festival and later toured to Sydney, Kangaroo Valley, Canberra and Melbourne.

Darling's 2024 documentary The Pool was filmed at Bondi Icebergs Club and premiered at the Sydney Film Festival before screening at other festivals.

Philanthropy and organisational roles

Darling founded Documentary Australia, a not-for-profit organisation that supports collaboration between philanthropic funders, charities and documentary filmmakers. He was chair of the Documentary Australia Foundation from 2006 to 2011.

He chaired Good Pitch Australia, a not-for-profit documentary funding and impact initiative hosted in Australia by Shark Island Institute and Documentary Australia. The Australian events raised philanthropic funding for 19 social impact documentaries and related impact campaigns.

Darling chaired the Sydney Theatre Company and the STC Foundation from 2006 to 2010. During his tenure, Cate Blanchett and Andrew Upton were appointed co-artistic directors of the company. He was succeeded as chair by David Gonski.

Darling was chair of The Caledonia Foundation from 2001 to 2022 and was co-founder and managing director of Caledonia Investments Group from 1992 to 2003. He has also been associated with the National Institute of Dramatic Art, The Oasis Youth Support Network, The Salvation Army and Impact Partners.

Photography

Darling's photographs have been finalists in the Doug Moran National Portrait Prize, the National Photographic Portrait Prize and the Sydney Life Photography Prize. His portrait of Jon Muir was included in "The Look" in 2019 and is held in the collection of the National Portrait Gallery in Canberra.
