To ensure clear, correct, and consistent citation of the IPCC reports a canonical citation format has been developed which is the preferred style in all climate change articles. This page contains the full references and chapter details for the reports in the

IPCC Fifth Assessment Report: Climate Change 2013 (AR5)

DRAFT REPORTS: Draft reports should not be cited, except to document where they vary from the final report. All other references to draft reports should be replaced when the final reports are released.

Draft reports may be expected to differ from the final report, and should cited separately, with a separate reference. Ask for assistance on Talk page.
Link to draft reports with (e.g.): in {{Harvnb|IPCC AR5 WG1 draft|2013}}.
It is recommended that all citations of draft reports be tagged with
{{Update after|2014|December|reason=Citation of draft; check and re-cite to final report}}
to aid in finding and replacing them with the final reports become available.

Please note the following:

  • The canonical format has been revised to use templates. (Not yet available for WG2 and WG3.)
  • Listed below are templates for short and full citations for each chapter.
  • The short citations (short cites) are for use in the body of the article (either in-line in the text, or in a note [between <ref>...</ref> pairs]).
  • Each short cite should be followed by a link to the specific section or figure referenced. (The urls will not be available until the report is released on-line.)
  • If you reference the printed report: insert "|p=xx" or "|pp=xx-xx" after the year. Append section or figure name after the cite as above.
  • Include exactly one full citation in the article for:
    • each chapter referenced.
    • each AR5 report (WG1, WG2, WG3) referenced. (Reference draft reports separately.)
  • To avoid cluttering the article text and to ease maintenance, the full citations should be included in a separate section. This is usually called "References".
  • Any {{reflist}} templates in a "References" section should be moved to a "Notes" section.

This is great..... but it would be even greater with an "EXAMPLES" section. Something like

Include short cites in the article body....... Blah blah blah blah blah blah.{{Short cite}} Blah blab blah.....
Using paired REF codes is optional.
If you do you get.... and that's good/bad because.....
If you don't you get.... and that's good/bad because.....
Include long cite in the _____ .......  ?????? ?????? something not sure what ????????
If you use a short cite in the body and forget to include long one as described above you get this.....and that's good/bad because.....
If instead you just use the long one in the body you get.... and that's good/bad because.....

Also explain how we can include long cites in a references section without creating a conflict with the references section that generates for all the other cites (the ones in paired editing codes). Yes, yes, yes. Further developments here are on hold till I can get resolution at Help talk:Citation Style_1 ("Missing or empty title") on using the method I developed, or if everything has to be changed. I would like to drop the "missing or empty title" message, but Trappist refuses, saying I should use {{Harvc}}, to which I object on various grounds. NewsAndEventsGuy, Dave souza, William M. Connolley, prokaryotes, and anyone else that might be interested in this stuff: my interest in improving the IPCC citations is flatlining, due to this inability to get a proper tool (or get the proper tool fixed). I'm not certain how to answer that. What precisely do you consider "technical"? At one level the sticking points (for both of us) can be taken as simply "don't like it" (and therefore non-technical?), but at a deeper level we both have considerations which are sublimely technical.
