hyperammonemia brain damage - permanent or reversible?
[edit]is the damage that hyperammonemia does on the brain permanent or reversible? In case the cause of the ammonia overproduction is removed, does the brain come back to its previous state? Pls note that I am not asking for medical advice, just some info based on statistical data
Hyperammonemia -- not always an inborn error of metabolism
[edit]"Hyperammonemia," technically, refers to elevation of levels of serum (blood) ammonia regardless of cause, and does not imply a specific cause (etiology). This article seems to imply that hyperammonemia is always caused by a genetic/heritable abnormality ("Inborn Error of Metabolism" [IEM]). This is not the case. Liver failure, particularly fulminant "hepatic (liver) failure" of any cause, and drug/medication reactions are among other frequent causes (and are more common than IEMs).
