Merge w/ Obstructive uropathy

I think Obstructive uropathy should be merged into this page. They are really the same thing. Robbins equates the two terms on page 1012: "unrelieved obstruction almost always leads to permanent renal atrophy, termed hydronephrosis or obstructive uropathy." Chaldor (talk) 08:19, 17 July 2008 (UTC)

They really aren't the same thing, though. Obstructive uropathy refers to a physiologic process and hydronephrosis is just an anatomic finding. Acarmack (talk) 13:43, 18 August 2008 (UTC)

• I realize that, but given that the primary sequale of obstructive uropathy is hydronephrosis, and there is only stub-level content in obstructive uropathy, it should be merged into the hydronephrosis section as a cause. If there is ever enough content to merit a split between the two concepts, then I would support that. However, as things currently stand, there is not enough content to merit an obstructive uropathy article all on its own when the hydronephrosis article is more comprehensive and so closely linked. UCSF SOM Inquiry Immersion Course Proposed Outline

Per the Wiki Education foundation, Wikipedia articles should be written with the general public in mind. My ultimate goal in editing the hydronephrosis wikipedia page is to update the page in a way that provides the most updated, accurate, and succint information regarding hydronephrosis in an easily digestable manner.

Outline of proposed changes

1. Update the wiki page to have the following headings:
   • Overview (new)
   • Signs and Symptoms
   • Causes
   • Pathophysiology
   • Diagnosis
   • Treatment
   • Prognosis
   • Complications (new)
   • Prevention (new)
2. Revise the following headings:
   • Overview (new)
     • Provide a succint overview on hydronephrosis
   • Signs and Symptoms
     • Update language to include less jargon
     • Add citations as needed
     • Make the signs and symptoms page more visually appealing
   • Causes
     • Update language to include less jargon
     • Several citations missing so add citations
     • Potentially add images to help with understanding
   • Pathophysiology
     • Update language to include less jargon
     • Can potentially combine pathophysiology and causes
     • Update to include more reliable medical references
   • Diagnosis
     • Include information regarding alternative methods of diagnosis including laboratory studies, urine analysis, and x-ray imaging.
   • Treatment
     • Currently, is lacking in information. Elaborate on potential treatment options.
     • Update section to ensure treatment is up to date with current medical practice.
   • Prognosis
     • Lacking in citations. Add citations to support current information. Also, see if there is any new information on prognosis because this section is short.

     • Include information about kidney failure as a result of hydronehprosis complications. Research other possible complications

Hello! Please find my peer review below:

For the lead: this might be something you're already planning to work on, but I think the lead could give more of an overview of the key points from Causes, Signs/Sx, Pathophys., Treatment etc., in addition to differentiating it from the alternative terms already listed. I think you wouldn't need a separate Overview section if you did that, as you mentioned in your workplan.

The additions to the Causes section are really helpful and written in an easy-to-understand manner. If you want to further simplify some jargon, I think terms like "ureterocele" or "urethrostricture" can be written out, but the hyperlink to those specific pages can stay. That way, the average reader would be more likely to roughly understand what those sentences are trying to communicate, but the more detail-oriented can click the link if they choose to do more reading.

This might again be something you're planning to address, but the Prognosis section seems relatively sparse compared to the others. I think the third paragraph ("For example, ...") might flow better if it were moved to immediately after the first paragraph. If there isn't too much additional information to add to this section, I think one whole paragraph would read more cohesively, as opposed to the shorter paragraphs currently. One other minor adjustment you could consider is changing "The prognosis of hydronephrosis is extremely variable and depends..." to "The prognosis of hydronephrosis is highly variable and depends..." for slightly more neutrality.

I appreciate the Grading subheading within the Diagnosis section. Overall, the article is well-organized. The additional information added is easy to understand for a Wikipedia audience and cohesive with the rest of the article.

Hi Victoria! I appreciate all of your feedback!

I just finished updating my wikipedia page with your feedback in mind. As far as the lead, I completely agree with you that there is a lot of room for improvement. I intended to adress the lead after finishing the remaining sections of the wikipedia page. I just finished and have updated the lead to include a more thorough overview of hydronephrosis and the information covered in the wikipedia page.

As far as the causes section, I have added more hyperlinks to help with clarifcation of medical jargon.

I also agree with you that the prognosis section is short compared to the rest of the sections. Because I could not find a whole lot of information regarding prognosis, I took your suggestion and compiled the information into one paragraph.

Lastly, I made some word changes to ensure my writing, especially in the prognosis section, had more of a neutral tone.

I would like to suggest a supplemental clinical resource for this article: Hydronephrosis: Clinical Overview and 3D Pathology Visualizations.

This resource provides professional 3D pathology renders that illustrate the different stages of pelvicalyceal dilatation. Specifically, it visualizes ureteropelvic junction (UPJ) obstruction, offering a clear spatial perspective on how urinary blockage affects the renal parenchyma. I believe this complements the existing ultrasound and CT images by providing a 3D anatomical context.

Leade section seems a bit long

I know this page has recently undergone some pretty extensive editing, and I'm not sure to what extent that is still in progress. So I thought I'd bring this up here before just slapping a tag on the page, but the leade does seem overly long compared with what is standard for similar articles. In my personal opinion, you could probably even just get rid of he last three paragraphs all together, as that's all info I would expect to find further down. But that's just me, if anyone has any thoughts, it would be much appreciated Gravelove (talk) 21:16, 24 April 2026 (UTC)
