This article is confusing to laymen. It talks about Howe and Pratt trusses, but the only image showing them shows to identical X-braced bridges, one magically with verticals in tension, the other with verticals in compression, basically identical otherwise, which is not easy to understand. right next to it the text is saying "on a Howe truss the diagonals lean one way, on a Pratt they lean the other", which is baffling when every picture on the page shows bridges of square panels with X shaped diagonals inside, and a drawing appearing to show that Pratt and Howe trusses LOOK identical. It wasn't until I left Wiki and went to Google that I found simple drawings that jogged my memory of shop class, showing that a BASIC Howe or Pratt is built with only ONE diagonal per panel, not an X brace, and indeed, they lean different ways from the center. Surely such an image could be found or made for such an important page as this? The X-braced trusses are apparently DOUBLE Howe or Pratts, functionally the same as the simpler ones (I assume) but visually very confusing to a layman trying to figure out what the text is talking about.

On reviewing the article more closely, I agree that the current sequence is unnecessarily confusing for a reader who is not already familiar with truss terminology. The comparison image depicts a more advanced development of the basic truss concepts, incorporating counterbracing or double-diagonal arrangements, before the article has clearly explained the simpler Howe and Pratt configurations from which those designs evolved. As a result, the defining distinction between the basic truss types is visually obscured.
I am planning a broader rewrite of the article using the structure of the Long truss article as a model. The revised discussion will begin with a simplified explanation of the basic Howe truss: timber diagonal braces sloping upward toward the center of the span and acting primarily in compression, with vertical iron rods acting in tension. It will then compare that elementary arrangement with the basic Pratt truss, in which the principal diagonals slope in the opposite direction and act primarily in tension.
Only after establishing that distinction will the article introduce counterbraces and explain why later railroad examples may have included X-braced panels. I also plan to add or prepare a clearer side-by-side diagram showing the basic single-diagonal Howe and Pratt forms, followed by a separate illustration of a counterbraced Howe truss. That should make the more complicated historical photographs and drawings easier to interpret.
The rewrite will also reorganize the article so that the structural explanation precedes the detailed construction information. The existing technical material on chords, rods, angle blocks, counterbracing, and adjustment is useful, but it currently appears before the reader has been given a simple conceptual model of the truss.
