Cedar Chest?

Cedar Chest redirects to Hope Chest? These are different things, why redirect it? A Cedar Chest is for storing items. It's made out of Red Cedar, which is particularly aromatic, and moths hate it. In short: It keeps the bugs away from your blankets. A Hope Chest is a chest an unmarried woman would use to store up items for use when she got married. I imagine the reason is The Lane Company patented their "Lane Cedar Chest" which was advertised across the U.S. as a hope chest in the early 1900s, and they are the main material that such hope chests were typically made of. While I don't know how useful the redirect is or general rule of redirects, neither 'pine chest' or 'maple chest' have their own page because they are, as you said, just chests made of a specific material. This page is about an article used in European and European-derived cultures. The dower system in India is a fascinating topic that deserves to be included on a page more closely related to it than this one. As far as I'm aware, the proto-into-european cultural crossover happened so far in the past that it's doubtful that the use of dower chests in the west and in India rose from the same cultural root. Broadening/renaming?

"Hope chest", as the article itself points out, is a very culturally-specific term. This article might be more useful if renamed and refocused on the topic of marriage chests in general, at least in European and North American contexts. MorrisStuff (talk) 03:34, 28 July 2024 (UTC)

Genizah quotation

Is the quotation regarding the Genizah documents in the "Arab origin" section appropriate? I suspect not. The Genizah documents belonged to the Jewish community and reflect Jewish customs, not Arab customs.Bill (talk) 23:55, 26 September 2024 (UTC)

I have been looking at the organizational structure of the article and feel that it would benefit from some clarifying headings that may have been deleted over time. Upon my review of the article's history, there was a 'Style' section that was deleted in April 2024, in which 'Decoration' and its following information was added to the 'Suffocation hazard to children' heading. If anyone is able to provide an clarification as to if this reorganization was intentional, that would he helpful!

In the same vein, I am suggesting the 'Decoration' information be moved above the 'Suffocation hazard' section, as a hope chest's decoration is an intrinsic characterization of the item while its hazards are extrinsic.

Howdy! I have finished my edits on this article and wanted to do a general summary and explanation of my edits for future editors.

There were some sources that had broken links or were irrelevant to the article (from what I saw), so I deleted the broken sources and replaced them when I could. I tried not to delete information that I could not confirm from my initial search, but instead added a '[citation needed]' where applicable.
