Talking about what HongMeng is and isn't

After reading the 2024 Usenix paper, it seems to me that HongMeng is an L4-like microkernel that can either be used as is for embedded applications where the IPC overhead is acceptable or as a hybrid kernel where parts of the OS are brought into kernel space (with some additional protection) for applications where it would not be. The confusing part is that, in that paper and generally, Huawei seems to use the HongMeng name to refer to all three: the L4-like "core kernel", an embedded multiserver OS built around it, and the Linux-compatible hybrid kernel which is presumably used in Harmony OS NEXT, which makes it, in my opinion, sort of hard to talk about. I wouldn't be surprised if 3rd party sources are also getting confused by this. Irene Twoth (talk) 16:09, 26 February 2026 (UTC)Reply
