A fact from Homomonument appeared on Wikipedia's Main Page in the Did you know column on 8 May 2004. The text of the entry was as follows:

Untitled
[edit]is often described as a memorial to the gay victims of World War II,
Shouldn't that be gay victims of Nazi Germany? I'm sure a lot of gays died in World War II, but I doubt that this is commonly described as a reason for the monument.--Eloquence* 21:29, May 6, 2004 (UTC)
Yes that is a loose formulation. Incidentally, I am interested to know if the Nazi occupation authorities took any action against gay men in the Netherlands. They don't seem to have done so in Paris. Adam 00:20, 7 May 2004 (UTC)
Remember that many of the gay men liberated from the camps faced persecution from the liberating governments too, their sexual orientation having been identified. - Montréalais 02:13, 2 May 2006 (UTC)
Amsterdam is NOT the capital of The Netherlands. I've changed it. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 86.88.213.176 (talk) 12:12, 19 January 2008 (UTC)
- Yes, it is. Jvhertum (talk) 13:21, 19 January 2008 (UTC)
Must be an American thing...
[edit]They should have entitled this monument something different. The current name sounds incredibly distasteful. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Vayne (talk • contribs) 07:32, 13 October 2008 (UTC)
- Correct, that's an American thing. The Dutch word 'homo' doesn't have the negative connotations the American word has. (But trust me, we have other insults.) 'Homomonument' sounds slightly playful to Dutch ears. Modallist (talk) 18:56, 17 October 2008 (UTC)
Timing in the history
[edit]Maybe I'm reading this wrong, but it looks like designs were submitted (1980) a year after construction began (1979). Is planning of construction always this haphazard and carefree in the Netherlands? If so, I have some ideas to build dikes. Call me, Netherlands. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 97.113.27.222 (talk) 19:58, 27 January 2013 (UTC)
